And lo, this is what I have been doing today. Exciting, innit?

  • 09:38 Is my computer being slow or just Livejournal? #
  • 11:10 I was not expecting people to be defending the use of the word 'gollywog'. I've been entrenched in my corner of the internet too long. #
  • 11:57 Linkspam: BBC and sexism: Carol Thatcher is fired, Clarkson defended. tinyurl.com/Read more... )

livejournal, equality, feminism, dinosaurs!, racism

LJ was doing some maintenence this morning. They're trying to fix the ONTD problem. Still.

But I didn't notice any speed problems at that time. Mostly because I was asleep.

I wonder if people are defending the "gollywog" thing because they think its in reference to Andrew Murray's hair rather than a black chap Gael Monfils? Jo-Wilfred Tsonga? Reports are unclear as to whom. (Doesn't make the comment OK if it was about Andy Murray.)

The Clarkson thing annoys me because much of the time he makes me laugh, and then he'll say something like that and you just want to smack him. There's a time and a place for "dead baby jokes" and its on Beta or in the pub when you've had a few- and you know the people round the table. Not Sunday night after tea in front of 10 million viewers.

I have heard the following:
- it's in reference to the doll, and even though the doll stereotypes the other, you can't judge the doll because Times Were Different then.
- it's in reference to a white man, and it's perfectly OK to use racial slurs against white men.

I just - can't really find the words other than ARE YOU STUPID?

My mum had a Golliwog doll, and she loved it when she was a kid. Many people her age did. Does that mean she (or most sane people) think its acceptable to use the term when referencing anything other than the doll? No. Course not.

And Andrew Murray doesn't have hair "like a golliwog" he has hair like mine.

The controller of BBC1 on the Today programme was very good- basically saying "we asked her to apologise. She didn't, she still hasn't, so we've fired her."

I wonder if Clarkson does at least know when to stfu and eat humble pie though a public apology would have been nice.

Since you tweet whenever you LJ and LJ whenever you tweet, does that make your journal and Twitter into a very slow automatic feedback loop?

Oh yes. It's perfectly OK, the UK abolished racism ages ago.
