[Blogging on Demand] Changing Medias

Apr 03, 2008 11:37

Yes, I am still going with the blog challenge meme. And yes, I am still willing to take requests. wanderlustlover asked:What are you views on the loss/gain of changing medias? Ex. Book to play, play to movie, musicals on cd vs. musicals on stage, etcetera.
I came up with a rule once )

tv, stage, opinion, dc, movies, poetry, books

always see the film before reading the book

Funny, I always think exactly the opposite, for the simple reason that if I read the book first I can visualize for myself what the characters, locations, etc. are supposed to look like; while if I see the film first, my mind's eye is already "contaminated" and I tend to visualize things as they appeared in the film.

Its a problem whichever way you look at it. Either you're annoyed that they've not portrayed it in the way you expected it to look in your head, or you can't escape the look of the film- which makes it worse if the film has changed the feel of the books.

I don't know; personally, it's easier for me to think of the movie as an "alternate version" of the same story and enjoy it for what it is, than it is to read the book without preconcieved visuals if I've seen the movie first.

Much as I enjoy Jurassic Park, it still manages to enrage me to this very day- and don't even get me started on The Lost World...

But I really liked the BBC adaptation! I mean, sure, they inserted Love Interests in order to heterocise John and Ned and in doing so broke up my first ever slash pairing, but at least it wasn't the American version with the platinum blonde cavegirl.

...wrong Lost World.

I meant the Crichton one.

Agree utterly that the BBC one ruled, though, if only for Bob Hoskins almost being Brian Blessed...

ooooh.

You mean Jurassic Park II. I won't relate that travesty to the Conan Doyle book.
