Between this and all the movies I've watched recently I think my straight is broken

Wicked is one of the best musicals I've ever seen, in terms of both the quality of the songs and the talent of the cast (Die Schwetsr said that Kerry Ellis has perhaps the best voice she's ever heard in a West End musical at all). It was very much worth the price of admission - £40 for circle seats, which I thought was a little much at first ( Read more... )

i really wasn't a fan of the book. it left far too much up in the air, and really felt more like an insult to the original series, in my mind. Taking a nice story and making it all about different things, and darker....

How do you make the
Oz series darker?

okay, granted, the later stuff ws pretty dark, but... *shrugs.* it just didn't have the feel of the originals, making the Wizard a despot and Glinda a flake, trying to make the witcha good person...

'Kay, I have a problem with "Wicked" (the book, not the musical, which I've never seen).

The book bills itself as an "alternate view" of the events of the Baum novels. I think the review on Wikipedia even says something to the effect that nothing in "Wicked" directly contradicts anything in Baum's books.

So I read "Wicked".

Oh, sure, it doesn't contradict anything in Baum's books... well, except for the history, geography, politics, religion, institutions, and populations of OZ, as well as the biographies and personalities of all the major inhabitants thereof. All that is completely different than it is in the Baum books. But, y'know, except for all that it's exactly the same!

"Wicked" doesn't even count as really bad fanfic - it's a completely different fantasy world, with a few names from OZ grafted onto it for marketing purposes.

I was pretty shocked and a bit disappointed by the end of the musical. The book ends with the Witch dead, melted by a bucket of water thrown by Dorothy. (Her aversion to water is mentioned all the way through the book, too.) Boq, Nessarose and Fiyero's characters are very different too, although I can see how they needed to be changed to make the plot simpler and shorter.
