Bartending sucks as a job, but you do make really good money. The places where bartending doesnt suck as a job, you make shitty money. I bartend in a card room at a country club and I get yelled at by old guys all day long, but in the end I make better cash than most people that work at restaurants and other random places. What I am trying to say is it's better to get a job where you will get to know the regulars and they will get to know you and therefore through that relationship you will make shitloads of cash. I could definitly see you bartneding in a country club and making good money doing it.

Also, dont even bother with going to bartending school. It's easy to pick up without the schooling.

yeah, don't bother with the bartending school. work at a small mom and pop place for a while and make shitty money while learning the ropes. then apply at restaurants, but as a warning- bartenders at restaurants were usually servers for a while, a bartending job there is the top spot. or you could start going to certain clubs or bars, get to know some people and put your name in. they may put you as a barback at first (you bring the ice, make sure the liquor is stocked, fill non-alcholic drinks), you wont make as much money, but you will learn how that particular place works and soon get a higher paying job as a bartender.
juggling that job and school is very difficult. you probably wont get to sleep until about 4 am or so, and will have to deal with some very shaky people. but good luck, it pays great and is fun!

if you have a good personality, enjoy making all kinds of frou-frou drinks, are willing to act as part-psychiatrist, and work well under pressure, the job is actually quite fun. but like always, you have your days where you don't want to conversate with anyone, or do anything, and it sucks. but for the most part, i enjoy bartending a great deal; that's why i can't find a 'real' job. and it's true about the restaurants; usually you have to 'apply within.' they won't make you a bartender immediately unless you already have experience. in btr, if you want to avoid the crazy typical college crowd, avoid tigerland at all costs. try cadillac's, ivar's, french quarter daquaris, or dublin's. hell, try george's downtown...
