I've been trying to figure out what to say about this fic. I liked it, very much, and I'm reccing it in my LJ because I really think it's that good. It's hard to find a compliment to give you, though, because you didn't make a light thing that I can clap my hands over, you made a heavy thing that made me think.
I really liked this. The different perspectives you used here about this one topic are something I wish we'd see more of on the show itself.
I was doing some pondering on how we never saw the Pegasus natives' viewpoints on stuff, and that led to "well, why would *all* of them have the *same* viewpoint, obviously they wouldn't" and from there it spiralled out and made this.
Thanks for letting me know it said something to you. :)
Ronon thinks again that Earth people won't possibly do well against the Wraith when they don't do well with the truth.
Wow. I don't really know what to say here except that I really liked this and a lot of things in it seemed really true. The above is totally how I see Ronon's attitude in general - not stating the truth doesn't make ugly truths any less true. And I deeply love how you go into the different cultural attitudes of the residents of Pegasus. Well done!
I really like the way this is set up -- I didn't know much about the characters coming into this fic, but I feel like I've learned a lot about them just from the way each duo plays off of each other. I'm particularly impressed by the way that Rodney manages to seem like two different people depending on the point of view -- Teyla thinks he's a lout, while he turns around and feels superior to Ronon. Is there a word for succesfully making a character consistently inconsistent? Is this the most confusing review in history. (Look at poor Jimmy! I've confused him!)
Seriously, excellent fic. I remember when you were working on it and stressing about how to figure out the alien cultures' views of suicide, and it seems you worked that out very well!
OMG, I've had this tab open forever trying to figure out what I want to say about this. It's heavy. It makes my brain hurt trying to articulate what I think about it, to stretch around all the ideas held here. I really like Teyla and Ronon's look at it especially, because I think it's really indicative of different levels of 'civilization'. The Pegasus Galaxy, by and large is a much more depressed region than Earth etc. They have to be be much more survival oriented and thus individual freedom is a much smaller consideration. People are REQUIRED to bond together and think of the whole in a way that becomes more elastic when the basics of life are abundant enough to create a leisure class of people who are not as NECESSARY to the survival of the species.
It's the kind of thing that really fascinates me to explore and read and I think you did just a brilliant job of it here. *smooches*
