Oooh, this is nice. I really, really like the voice you've got going. And I'm with you - for all the adorableness of HH1, there needs to be more Renown-era fic out there.
This was really lovely. I love how you've made clear the fact that Horatio needs Archie just as much as Archie needs Horatio. And the time period you set it in was really great. Aren't too many early Renown pieces out there. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks. :) I think that's what I love about their relationship on-screen, whether I'm gleefully reading slash into it or not (okay, most of the time I am, but sometimes I try to pull back): it's really a lovely friendship, and they support each other so well.
Lovely, but I expected no less. It's interesting to see a pre-Mutiny-era fic. Clearly things were already bad prior to Bush's arrival, but this fic illuminates the situation quite nicely. And the boys are already in the respective roles: Horatio, dutiful and still hopeful; Archie far more realistic and fatalistic. The allusions back to Justinian are, alas, quite a propos.and those last two lines?

The poor dear has *no* idea.

If this is what you consider spamming, then please, sir, can I have some more?! I'll send the boys along to make puppy dog eyes, if you like and I'll make sure they wear their big boy pants (and not much else) when they do. ;-)
PS. The title actually did make sense, but given that this is coming from the queen of the crappy fic titles, that might not seem like praise.
I really, really hope my fic-brain gives in and produces some slash soon instead of all this gen, LOL. I love gen, but the pretty! It belongs together!
This was lovely. I especially like Horatio's line: "If you begin lying to me, I fear I shall go mad in this place." So evocative of the poisonous atmosphere of the _Renown_ and of Horatio's fear that even the one person he can trust will be distorted by it. And Archie not wanting to trouble Horatio with his dreams fits so well with his character, as does his crack about spirits and human misery. I like his cynical side, and his mixture of competence and lingering doubt.
Sorry I never thanked you for the Hornblower recs--that was right before I went to Michigan--but they were lovely.
Since you write Hornblower gen, you might be interested in "The Trousers of Time" by clotho123--it's a gen AU/Retribution fixit focusing on the character of Sir Edward Pellew.
Consider me converted. :) And yes, I have browsed around Ye Olde Crack Van some; you did a double whammy and converted me to Sports Night as well. :) I've been all Shiny!New!Fandom! lately. I tend to do like you do and dive into a fandom right away and read absolutely everything and start writing snippets and then gradually cool off and let the fandom become just one in my ongoing repertoire of fandoms.

I take it you've been looking around the fandom a bit on your own since experiencing the movies? Did I convert you? ;)
