By the way, after writing this, I spent a good half-hour of toll booth time pondering the deeper implications of how the Enterprise is always called a "ship" (formal, technical, elegant), while Serenity is a "boat" (simple, essential, to the point). Yeah, I didn't come up with anything.

Oh my! *grins* I never really thought about how well that all lines up. I always thought of Firefly's characters as being less, I don't know, less like spaceship archetypes than ST:TNG's but they do seem to match up don't they. Loved Riker and Zoe -- to funny. And this line:

Three times boring is still boring.

is so brilliantly River. Loved her conversation with Data too. I also really liked Book and Guinan because I like both of their characters, but I never would have seen the similarities if you hadn't pointed it out.
