#76: Drinking With Strangers: Music Lessons from a Teenage Bullet Belt, Matt Diehl and Butch Walker. Oh, definitely read this if you want surreal music-business rambling. I was put off by the first bit, but it settles into stride eventually. Butch Walker is demented and fun ( Read more... )

I NEED GODDAMN DETAILS, BUTCH WALKER.

I mean, c'mon, if he was punched GABE for being pretentious...

Right? If Gabe was pretentious enough to punch, he must've tried to hit William with his car.

Also, the bit about Kara DioGuardi makes it make a lot more sense how Sabi sounds so...very different singing YMMF live. /diplomatic

This sounds exactly like the kind of book I would love, and all the super musically relevant sections you posted sold me on it! Thank you for bringing it to my attention. :D

It's enjoyable! There are definitely moments where I went "lol Butch, defensive much?" but y'know. Unreliable narrator and all. :D

It is probably much less of a trainwreck than Motley Crue's book was, and THAT being a trainwreck goes without saying but this should be less of a "...oh god" read. \o/

That actually makes a lot of sense with Kara Diguardi though, because I remember Leighton not sounding very much like she did on the record the one time she performed GGGB with Cobra live. I haven't listened to any of Sabi's original stuff or her singing live so I can't say for sure, but I would like to think she sounds better than she does when she does YMMF live!

Yeahhh, I saw her at the FBR15 show, and it was...not good. It's an interesting explanation.

I definitely thought Butch was in his early 20s until I wiki'd him just now. OH. That...explains a lot.

Ha ha, nope. He's a cranky late-30s dude. The running theme in the book is that every genre he tries out with his own music is five years too early or fifteen years too late, and then he ends up helping younger people be successful with it.

That makes me think of Merlin in The Once and Future King. Living backwards through time is really confusing and he always gets mixed up. :(

I love that you have one of his lyrics as your LJ name thingy. :D

Also it's great that he's bitchy and catty about everyone until he gets to FOB, and then he's all "They are made of sunshine and kittens." I wonder what blackmail Pete Wentz has on him.

Gabe was such a chore sometimes to deal with.

I'm guessing that everyone who has ever had to deal with Gabe is just nodding their heads sagely at this part.
