I love War Dances--I read it on a flight cross-country, started it at atkeoff and couldn't put it down. Sherman Alexie is probably my favorite poet who is still alive and writing today, and I love the way his fiction is really just as good. My favorite thing about him, though, I think, is the way he fictionalizes--he takes so much that is real and so much that is not and all of it rings so true--it's something I can only aspire to in my own writing.
