On the Verge of Something Wonderful
: the Christmas lights scene from
Apocalypse The evening of Christmas Eve, Changmin wanders the busy streets of Seoul, staring up at the decorative Christmas lights, winking down at him like artificial stars. He's invited to a party- we're going to count down to Christmas, drink a little and just talk, it'll be fun, Jaejoong told him earlier, you should come. Changmin said he'd think about it, but Changmin knows that he'll not be going, and so does Jaejoong. Jaejoong has known him for six years, and he knows Changmin hates parties.
Despite that, it's more than just a little depressing to spend Christmas Eve alone.
Changmin pushes his hands into his pockets, wondering if he should call Jaejoong and tell him that he's going after all. He doesn't have to make small talk, he can sit somewhere and just not be alone. One heartbeat after that thought, Changmin nearly laughs out loud. Sitting in a room full of people doesn't mean you're not alone- Changmin of all people should know that.
Someone runs into him, their bodies slamming together. Changmin stumbles backwards at the impact, quickly regaining his balance. The stranger has an armful of tangled Christmas lights, and there's a look of panic on his face as he falls backwards.
Changmin tries to grab him before he falls, but he's too slow, and he ends up holding out an arm awkwardly, fingers hovering in the air in mid-grasp, as the stranger scrambles to get up from the ground.
"Sorry," Changmin says breathlessly, noticing that the Christmas lights have gotten even more tangled, if that was possible.
The stranger glares down at his armful of lights. "How on earth am I supposed to put this up-" he glances at his watch. "And I'm already late."
"I'm really sorry," Changmin says again.
"It's not your fault," the stranger says, smiling for the first time and Changmin doesn't know if what to say or do, or if he should smile back, and he's never felt so embarrassed or awkward in his life. The smile grows wider, and it's almost hypnotic, and Changmin finds himself opening his mouth- "I can help you, if you want."
Changmin blinks, processing what he just said.
"Are you serious?" the stranger says, smile stretching across his face. "You don't mind?"
"I don't mind," Changmin sputters.
"Great, excellent, brilliant," the stranger thrusts the lights into Changmin's arms. "Thank you so much," he waves his arms around, nearly smacking an old lady in the face. "I'm Junsu, by the way. Kim Junsu-" For good measure, he swings his arms around once more, this time sending a poor man's glasses askew.
"Be- careful-" Changmin tries to tell him but Junsu is already walking briskly down the street, and Changmin has no choice but the follow.
"Plug that in," Changmin tells Junsu, balancing on the ladder as he winds the lights gingerly around the Christmas tree. "But don't turn it on, I don't want to get fried-"
Junsu grins up at him, leaning against the wall, ankles crossed. "Okay, okay, hurry up, the guests are going to be coming in any moment-"
"Why don't you come up at do it," Changmin holds the end of the lights out and raising an eyebrow. The ladder sways a little and Junsu yelps, rushing forward and putting his arms out to steady it.
Changmin leans forward and curls the lights carefully round and round until he reaches the tip of the tree. "Done," he declares, and slowly makes his way down the ladder. Two steps before he reaches ground, he sees the sharp glint of Junsu's smile, and he has the words don't you dare on the tip of his tongue when Junsu shoves the ladder, sending Changmin tumbling to the ground.
Changmin swears, sitting up, and before he can get up and decide how he's going to get back at Junsu for this, Junsu is kneeling in front of him.
Junsu isn't smiling.
"What?" Changmin says warily, his voice coming out raspy and shaky. "Junsu-sshi?"
And then Junsu is kissing him.
He hears the sound of a door opening, and the sound of laughter, and suddenly he has a mouthful of glitter. He jerks backwards away from Junsu and opens his eyes. They're covered top to toe in silver glitter. Someone is standing at the door, grinning and holding up half a bag of glitter.
"Park Yoochun-" Junsu howls, hands scrubbing at his face. "I ate some of this!"
Changmin is horrified to find that he's in the same glittery state as Junsu is, and he tries desperately to get the glitter off his tongue. It doesn't taste good at all, and Changmin has no idea how he ended up in such a situation.
Park Yoochun looks completely unapologetic, turning around to leave. He flicks the switch before shutting the door behind him.
The Christmas tree lights up, an multitude of cheery colours, blinking on and off. Changmin turns to look at Junsu, still kneeling in front of him, dusting glitter out of his hair with a scowl on his face- the combination of Christmas lights and glitter make him look like he's glowing.
"Junsu," he says quietly. Junsu looks up at him, meeting his gaze.
Changmin holds very still for two seconds, holding Junsu's gaze, before leaning forward and shoving a handful of glitter down the collar of his shirt.
The arrival of Christmas is Changmin's victorious laughter, Junsu's indignant howls, and the two of them rolling around together on the glittery floor, on the verge of something wonderful.
Hopefully my attempt at happy fic isn't too bad? :D
