How much worse would he feel if he were in Hikaru's shoes? Then again no parent wants to hear that there is a good chance that they will out-live their child.
Reading this makes me want to read more, especially with the depth of emotion that you inject in each chapter. Wonderful job on the story.

Regarding this chapter, I'm still a little weary of Masao's reasoning for writing Hikaru off as having no future. I guess I'll just have to integrate it into my mind that Masao is just really disappointed in what Hikaru has left for himself. But he still should talk to him! Arrrgh. Poor, little Hikaru! I hope Masao catches a clue when Hikaru wakes up and starts interacting more with the outside world.

As for Masao, well, some parents do think like that. My beta-readers thought it was a very Asian thing. We'll see what happens...

My dad wrote me off after being diagnosed with depression. It's taken a while to get my mother and her family to accept it too. There is nothing more horrid than a mental disease to an Asian family, nothing more shameful. Ignorance is a part of it, and so is culture. It's not pleasant, but it's a way of reality for a lot of people.
Sometimes this makes me glad that I'm in the United States.
