Sweet, but... I didn't really understand what on earth was going on, especially with Rodney. And why is Carson ashamed? *sheepish grin* Maybe I'm being nitwitted, but care to explain?

:-) No problem ... there's a lot implied in the snippet but not spelled out.

What I envisioned is that Rodney was hurt somehow -- head injury, perhaps -- something non-recoverable. He's grownup, he's married to his lover, he's on Atlantis. The injury post-dates the marriage.

Carson feels guilty because while he accepts til death do you part for being with his husband, and loves him still dearly, he is conflicted between being Rodney's caregiver and Rodney's husband. The thing is, Rodney might not be able to say a word anymore, but he still knows what he likes, and that includes sex.

One of my not-so-little pet peeves is the asexualisation of people with disabilities. It doesn't surprise me that this trend occurs in situations where a person is born with a disability -- the dangers of abuse from caregivers is always present and certainly something worth staying on guard against. However, far too many loving couples end up asexualising themselves because of situations like the one above, and I just felt the need to outline that ( ... )

Ah, okay. I really wasn't sure what was going on in the story, just that Rodney was acting a bit funny. Maybe if the story was a bit longer and contained a bit more background information? Anyway, good point made. Not a thing I've ever really thought about before.

One friend who has a family member with Down's Syndrome caught on quite quickly to the general nature of the problem, but I agree that it isn't overly obvious ... it's short and probably not surprising that we never hear Rodney speak. ;-)

Sometime I might flesh this out further ... hard to say. It was a very difficult piece to put to paper, even so short, so I don't know if I'm up to the task of adding in the obvious exposition in any readable way.

Thank you for reading (and dropping bye a couple more times, lol!) :-)

Having been a little confused as to the context of this story, I wasn't sure what to comment to start with.
But now knowing what backstory the fic deals with...just makes it heartbreakingly sweet.
The way you've portrayed, and jumps out of the page of, Rodneys innocence is just...wow. Carson's reaction again, is just astoundingly wow...I'm not sure if I'm getting my meaning across here.
So the reader, now knowing the context of the story, can be carried through the innocence and shame, into Ronon's acceptance.
And through this, I believe we understand human relationships a little better.

*blush* Thank you.

Human intimacy is one of the most basic human needs. Nothing hurts more than the inability to connect with others, and as I said above, it really saddens me when this happens by choice (after tragedy). There's nothing easy about continuing on in the face of adversity, but turning one's partner into a celibate because of injury, illness, or disability is outright cruel, imnsho.
