Hello, your trusty flaky neighborhood mod is checking in. Does anyone have suggestions for our May book? Please leave them in the comments and I'll put up the usual poll.

I've been thinking about something upbeat or humorous--how about David Sedaris or Terry Pratchett?

My copy of Persepolis just came in at the library, so I hope to be posting on ( Read more... )

Guards! Guards!, The Truth, or Pyramids would be fun.

Actually, anything by Pratchett would be fun, but I thought those three could be enjoyed by people new to Discworld as well.

I'd think Guards Guards was a good choice for people who haven't read much Pratchett before. Most of my favourites seem to need earlier books. I thought that The Truth worked better having read earier Ankh Morpork stories, but it probably wouldn't be critical...

I think you're absolutely right on The Truth. It's not critical, but it really would work a lot better.

So shall it be Guards! Guards! for sure as an introductory book, or can you think of anything better? (I'm actually not a fan of the Rincewind series, even if those are the first of the Discworld novels...)

I dislike the Rincewind books, so I'd suggest going with one of the other story threads. But if you've all read Guards! Guards! already, perhaps we should be thinking of something else entirely?

Historical fiction? Mystery? Something contemporary? A classic?

Guards! Guards was the first Pratchett book I ever read - I could probably do a re-read of it. I've also read Wyrd Sisters, Witches Abroad, Moving Pictures, and Going Postal - that's a new one that was in my library. The other 3 Pratchetts I'd read in High School, along with Guards! Guards - I'm sure I've read other ones, I just can't remember them now...

I'd love to read something light and humorous! I'd love to try another Sedaris (I've read Me Talk Pretty One Day several times now), but I've heard that some of his other books were shaky in quality, so I've been afraid to venture out on my own...
