A/N: for
ceirosken. Request: Hanmin, where Sungmin is Hankyung's little wife, and Hankyung is kind of into that.
I just looked over your actual request and this is nothing like what you asked for, but I hope the fact that it's Hanmin and it's kind of adorable, if I do say so myself, makes up for that :D It was supposed to go in a completely different direction, which is why the start is a little weird, and it's just, argh, some day I will write you some Hanchul that is awesome and them and will make up for my inability to write decent Hanmin :( ♥?
Sugar and Sunshine
Sungmin skips into the kitchen looking like sunshine personified, throws his arms around Hankyung's shoulders and sings, "Hyung~" into his ear. Hankyung has never appeared so terrified in his entire life; Heechul thinks that he's going to rupture something if he tries to hold his laughter in for much longer.
"Y-yes?" Hankyung tries, and oh god, Heechul just can't help it, he snorts a little, and Hankyung shoots him a look which is part alarm and part anger. Sungmin ignores Heechul's presence as he slips into the chair next to Hankyung, letting one hand rest on Hankyung's arm.
"I was thinking," he says, cheerful and bright, and Hankyung is looking at him a little warily. Heechul doesn't know why anyone even goes to the cinema when there's entertainment like this at home. "We should go out."
"Go out?" Hankyung looks like he hasn't understood.
"On a date," says Sungmin, with a smile.
It has been three days since Hankyung and Sungmin slept together. Actually, that whole thing was probably more hilarious than the scene playing out in front of Heechul right now, because he'd recieved two text messages in the space of about five seconds, one from Sungmin gushing about it, and Heechul really hadn't needed to know those details but you know, Sungmin's like that, and one from Hankyung going OH MY GOD I WASN'T EVEN THAT DRUNK WHAT HAPPENED.
Heechul has pretty much been laughing for three days straight now.
"A date?" repeats Hankyung, who now looks like he understood the words but not the exact meaning.
"Yeah," says Sungmin, faltering a little. Oh, how Heechul loves Sungmin and his romantic notions.
"I don't know," says Hankyung uncertainly. "I mean, we -- we kind of--"
Sungmin looks upset in a subtly tearful kind of a way, like he's going to go into his bedroom and cry himself to sleep but doesn't want anyone to realise that.
Hankyung sighs. Heechul bites his own cheek to stop himself from collapsing. Oh, how he also loves Hankyung and his inability to disappoint a pretty face. "Fine," he says. "Would -- is dinner okay? Or a movie, or something?"
"Dinner sounds good," says Sungmin brightly, and he jumps up and hugs Hankyung tightly and runs out of the room, calling; "Tomorrow, 7pm." He stops at the doorway though, looks back at Heechul, and smiles happily, and Heechul realises that it's time to stage an intervention.
"Look," he says, poring Hankyung another drink. "I'm not saying that you have to date him more than once, you just have to understand him if you're going to."
"I can't believe I'm even dating him," says Hankyung miserably. "I mean, when did this happen?"
"I've got no sympathy for you really," says Heechul. "I mean, you slept with him, what on Earth were you thinking?"
"He was just." Hankyung is still unable to explain how he went from eating some dinner at the same table as Sungmin to being in his bed. "He was -- he smelled nice," he finishes lamely.
"If I wasn't your best friend, I'd be so ashamed," says Heechul. "As it is, I've decided to help you."
"Help me?" Hankyung looks at him hopefully. "You mean you can get me out of this?"
"No," says Heechul firmly. "Look, you can't just sleep with someone and then refuse to take them out on a date. It's bad manners."
"But I never meant for this to happen," wails Hankyung, slumping down against the table, head in his hands. Heechul is unmoved.
"Suck it up," he says. "There are only a few things you know about Sungmin. He's exactly like me, he likes to have his own way, but he's a little more subtle about it."
"You mean he doesn't threaten you with castration?" Hankyung suddenly perks up. "Oh, well, that will be much easier to handle."
"The way Sungmin does it, he makes it so you don't even realise that you're being manipulated." Heechul grins as Hankyung slumps back down again. "He smiles in a coy sort of way when he wants something and looks up at you with wide eyes while you're deliberating on your answer. If you say yes, then he gushes at you. If you say no, he looks slightly tearful and upset but accepts your decision in a 'well, you know best' kind of way which makes you feel very, very guilty. He's very good at that look."
"I think I preferred threatening," says Hankyung sadly.
"No, you don't," says Heechul. "Sungmin at least will give you something back in return for the manipulation."
"Will he expect me to pay?" Hankyung asks, uncertain. If he was going out with Heechul for dinner, he'd be paying, because Heechul will only pay for friends, not boyfriends. Sungmin is rather different territory, however.
"Probably not," says Heechul. "Sungmin believes in equality in relationships, which is highly boring, I think. Like I said, you might be whipped, but you'll get something back for it."
"Something back?" Hankyung is still uncertain. Heechul grins at him in a leering sort of way. "Oh," says Hankyung.
"Oh," he says the next day, when he meets Sungmin at the door to the upstairs dorm. Sungmin smiles at him as he pulls his hoodie over his pale grey polo shirt and closes the door behind him, and Hankyung ignores the way that Kyuhyun and Eunhyuk grin at him knowningly from the crack in the doorway before it shuts. "Hi," he says.
"Hey," says Sungmin.
There is a brief pause before Hankyung goes "Well, um, should we, um," and Sungmin nods and they go down the hallway towards the lift, where they stand and listen to the music awkwardly, and Hankyung feels like he's been transported back to the morning after they slept together, when he woke up with one arm wrapped around Sungmin's waist as Sungmin slept half top on him, wondering why he had done it, all the while noticing the slightly damp warmth of Sungmin's breath against his neck.
This is slightly less awkward than when Sungmin woke up, smiling slowly in a way that had made Hankyung's stomach clench, with guilt, he thought at the time, and he had fled to the bathroom with his phone and texted Heechul in desperation, because he didn't have a clue what to do. Having to go out, talk to Sungmin, act as though the night before hadn't just been spur of the moment, like he'd wanted it, that had been awkward. He has managed, quite honestly, to completely cock his life up.
"I thought we could go to that Chinese place," says Sungmin, when they're walking down the street from the dorms, their hoods pulled up to avoid being recognised. "It's usually quiet in there this time."
"Chinese?" Hankyung looks at him to see where the catch is, because Heechul said that Sungmin was like him and with Heechul, if they were going somewhere apparently just for Hankyung, there would have been a catch. Sungmin looks back at him, half smiling, no ulterior motive whatsoever. "Okay, sure, great."
The restaurant, like Sungmin said, is fairly empty, and it's the place that they usually go to all together when they want to eat out; it is quite cheap, it is close by, and the owner is kind enough to throw anyone who hassles them out. Heechul drags Hankyung there all the time, so the owner doesn't bat an eyelid when he sees Hankyung there with only one other member, which is good, because Hankyung doesn't want anyone to know anything at all.
They sit at a table near the back, and order some food, and Hankyung thinks that even Yehsung would know what to say in this situation, but he has no idea, and he's thinking that there should be a hole somewhere so he can crawl into it and die when Sungmin says; "You know, I'm really jealous of Kyuhyun for being able to be part of SJM."
Hankyung looks at him with some amount of surprise. "You are?"
"Yeah," says Sungmin. "I mean, I love our Korean performances, but it must be something special to perform in another country regularly."
"It is," says Hankyung. "I -- I love being the leader of it."
"We all knew you'd make a great leader," says Sungmin with a grin.
"You did?" Hankyung had never realised that. He'd always been too busy trying to work out how to be a leader to look at what the others would think.
"Well, of course," says Sungmin. "I mean, it's your home country, isn't it? We all knew that you'd give it all you had to make it a success." Hankyung is silent; Sungmin grins at him from across their beer. "Don't tell him I told you, but Kyuhyun said that he really likes having you as a leader."
Hankyung stares at him. "He did?"
"He said that you were really patient with them when they didn't understand the Chinese, and that you were always willing to talk about Korea when they got homesick." Sungmin's smile is making Hankyung's chest clench. "But like I said, don't tell him that I said anything. He would smother me in my sleep."
Hankyung sits back, strangely touched at what he's just heard. Sungmin changes the subject and they continue to talk until Hankyung realises that their meal is over and they haven't had another awkward moment of silence. Sungmin has proven himself to be thoughtful and intelligent, and Hankyung has never really had a chance to talk to him like this, because whenever they went out together before, it was always with someone else, and before they could even think of falling into a conversation together they would both be dragged into one with another person. Hankyung thinks it's a little sad that it's taken over three years for them to be able to talk like this, but he figures that it's better late than never.
A waiter comes over with a desert menu, which he puts down on the table for them to peruse while he goes elsewhere. Hankyung catches Sungmin looking at it doubtfully, but also highly wistful. "Go on," he says, suprised. "You can have one if you want."
Sungmin shakes his head, smiling a little. "I'm supposed to be on a diet," he says.
Hankyung stares at him. He has only ever slept in the same bed as three people before: Heechul, Siwon and Sungmin. He's done it the most with Heechul, mostly when they roll in at three o'clock in the morning piss-drunk and collapse onto one bed together. Heechul is too bony for Hankyung, who always ends up with an elbow in his windpipe or a knee in his stomach. Siwon sometimes crawled into his bed in China, homesick, and wrapped his arms tight around him and Siwon hugs hard even in his sleep, his muscles making it uncomfortable, at least for Hankyung, because he has no doubt that some girl someday will be very happy to be in his position.
But with Sungmin, it had been slightly different -- but then, of course, the situation had been slightly different. Sungmin's skin was very soft; when Hankyung had taken his hand, there had been a sense of sinking, more in his chest than anywhere else. "You don't need to lose weight," he says, tone more sincere than even he had been expecting, and he sees the faint blush across Sungmin's nose that makes his stomach clench and his own face relax into an easy grin. "I'll make a deal with you," he says. "You order one and I'll share it with you."
Sungmin is enthusiastic over the idea and soon a chunk of chocolate fudge cake and vanilla ice cream is placed in front of them, and they devour it in five minutes. Hankyung lets Sungmin have the last piece, though he makes a show of chasing Sungmin's spoon around to stop him, and Sungmin's laughter makes his blood run warm. Sungmin finishes the last piece like he's savouring the last piece of chocolate in the world, and Hankyung smiles, is aware that he's smiling like a love-struck idiot, is aware that anyone looking at him is probably laughing at him, but can't bring himself to care. He wants to kiss Sungmin, he realises, and that thought is both terrifying and liberating.
This must have been it, he thinks, as Sungmin calls the waiter over to pay for the meal. This must have been what happened in those moments after sitting awkwardly in the same kitchen as Sungmin after drinking with him and Eunhyuk and Donghae, and before finding himself kissing Sungmin and pressing Sungmin down into the matress. This must have been what caused the minor part of his brain which was intoxicated take over the part that was screaming logic at him. This must have been the part of him that realised that Sungmin smelt like sugar and leant in and kissed him. He wants to kiss Sungmin now and he can't help it. He helps Sungmin fit his hood back over his head and then takes his hand and avoids his eyes and stops himself from laughing.
They walk back to the dorm when the heat of the day has given way to the coolness of the middle of twilight, when their part of the city is beginning to wind down a little, and they walk in silence, right up until they're standing outside the door to Sungmin's apartment. Hankyung drops his hand, suddenly feeling too awkward. He doesn't know where to go next with this. He isn't too sure whether he's supposed to kiss Sungmin like he would like to, or whether to just hug him, or whether to just turn around and leave. He knows that the last option is too abrupt, but it's the most appealing because it avoids any talking, which always has a potential to backfire.
Sungmin solves the problem by stepping forward and wrapping his arms around his waist and hugging him tightly. Hankyung exhales sharply, wraps his own arms around Sungmin's shoulders, and puts his head against his hair. He still smells sweet. They stay like that for a moment -- Hankyung's body tingles -- and then Sungmin steps away and smiles. "I don't suppose you want to--?"
Hankyung does, and they end up in the kitchen, sitting opposite one another with cups of coffee cooling in their hands, and they talk some more. Hankyung asks where the others are; Sungmin isn't sure, but he thinks Eunhyuk is at Sukira, and the other three are at voice training. So when Sungmin pours the cold remains of their drinks down the sink, Hankyung puts his hands on his waist and kisses him.
Maybe he's always loved Sungmin, or maybe that's something so recent he hasn't even really realised it yet. Maybe he's been leading up to this or maybe he's just living in the moment. All he knows is that he's a little in love with the way Sungmin kisses him like he's been leading up to this moment. Hankyung isn't sure what's happened that made this situation come around, and he doesn't know where they're going to go exactly with it, but he hopes -- listens to the breathless nonsense that Sungmin whispers into his mouth, knows -- that it will work out, somehow, because he will make it.
("You fucker," he says the next morning, when he goes back to his own dorm. Heechul is sitting on the sofa watching television and looks up when Hankyung hits him on the head. "Sungmin is nothing like what you said."
"You'll see!" Heechul shrieks at his back as he disappears into his bedroom. "You'll all see, only I know what he's really like!")
