I'm with you here. It's tragic and upsetting, but I still want to see where RTD goes with this. If it does turn into the Gwen show, alright, but since it's moving to BBCA, that seems a bit unlikely...

I'm quite honestly curious now. I'm past the point of being upset... I just want to know what the heck he's planning now. (I vote that he brings back John somehow. I think that could be awesomely hilarious. Partly just because I love James Marsters. But hey, it could happen...)

Well said, but I completely disagree. Real life has quite enough reality for me. I don't want my favorite characters to die as well, especially not as set-ups for plot resolutions. In my view, the characters ARE the story, and it's a different story without them. 'Let's really push Jack/Ianto, so we can kill off Ianto and destroy Jack' is not good writing. Character development is good writing. Character manipulation to achieve certain shock value endings is not.

To each their own, of course!

I can definitely see where you're coming from- the characters obviously make up a huge part of it, because without them there would be no story at all, of course. For me, I just don't see it so much as being as unnecessary a measure as most people seem to take it, and I think that's where the cleft really is. I see Ianto's death as tragic, yes, but ultimately I do see it as character development for Jack- or, if not within what we've seen so far, it could be. We've never really seen Jack broken like that before, and I find that to be a concept that really intrigues me, enough to keep me interested beyond the grief.

Thanks for commenting- it's nice to see other's takes on this, so that hopefully I can understand a bit better where everyone else is coming from. I appreciate it!

You're welcome. It's going to be interesting to see what happens if there really is another season.

Prior to COE, no one knew where it would go then, either, but people still had faith. Where did all that faith go? Why is everyone so ready now to attack him for what is, in my opinion, a strong move forward?

Because everyone is different. You had faith. You consider the story, whatever faults you feel it might have had, to have rewarded that faith. Others do not, they feel their faith was betrayed. That what they feel they were promised, they didn't get, and that what they got was far from a move forward, strong or otherwise. Faith once shattered isn't that easy to get back. So they won't watch or they will but there's no enthusiasm for a new series the way there was for CoE.

That's a great point - thanks for the input, I really appreciate it. I guess my biggest issue is being able to see how these events could "inspire" such a collapse of faith; it's something I struggle with, because while COE was by no means what I expected, I think that taken for what it is, it was well done. Just a difference of opinion, I suppose!

And on a completely unrelated note, I love your icon. For whatever reason, it makes me think that Q is there exasperating them, but that might be because I just watched some of the TNG episodes with Q in them! Either way, the dual facepalm from Picard and Ricker makes me grin.
