Doooobious Practice

There's a guy who comes in the library all the time, has for years, who is alcoholic, borderline homeless, and mentally ill. He loves to use the computers, but he is a threat to the staff, getting angry when there's not one available, threatening staff, even grabbing and twisting a co-worker's arm last week ( Read more... )

library, race, public

Well, that is the very question at hand. This same manager has conistently had trouble describing and identifying African-American patrons, so even though there is a semblance -- bald and black -- the upshot for me is that this is a manifestation of the "they all look the same" kind of rac(ial)(ist) sentiment.

I mean, if someone circulated a picture of Bea Arthur or Anton LaVey for my Most Wanted poster, I might be flattered, whereas others might see it as a twisted slur, an ill-conceived practice, for SO many reasons.

Damn! I wonder if it's a coincidence that this guy's name is Waylon Da Mon?

Maybe that manager's a better Jessica Fletcher than I gave him credit for.

I never knew Damon Wayans was homeless. It's sad what happens to these actors...

I forget the the library is not around to help people anymore. The average library staff is full of socio-phobes, marginals, shy and introverted people. They can hardly handle someone in the general public, let alone a man who needs mental help.

I bet the person who sent out the email is some insensitive, esoteric pseudo-intellectual, thinking he is high and mighty for working in the library while making fun of people "less" disadvantaged than him...and I bet he is still whining about the election results...

just a guess

Actually, the manager is sort of removed-from-the-real-world, Brill-creamed, window-blinds-obsessed, uninformed, white-suburbs-livin' half-effectual.

It's almost amusing how inept he is.

Wow. Now what happens if Damon Wayans really *DOES* stop by?

*hrmmm*

It is a bit fishy, though. :( I mean if the guy really _does_ look like Damon... But... *ponders*

I know. It just sits so weird with me. Especially since this particular manager has a whole series of half-minded racist blunders to his credit ... .
