Jason, this is a wonderful analysis of the film, which I have yet to see. Your synopses usefully prepares me for your discussion of the film's race and gender politics which you interrogate with sympathy and skepticism both. Avoiding the pitfalls of appraising the film's aesthetic values, you contextualize its depiction of social dynamics instead, considering them from your own sphere of reference like the best materialist critics. You make me want to see the film by alerting me to the textual complexities that may make it a less than satisfying experience--a paradox I appreciate. Thank you so much.
I posted a published review of this film (that is nowhere as complete as yours) on Facebook and asked if anyone who had see it had any opinions about it to share. One person replied. I wonder if you would allow me to post a link to this page of your blog as a comment to my fb post. I know that many who visit my page would appreciate reading this.
...one thing it doesn't feel like to me is queer. I wonder if others in the audience feel the same way. Or are they full of joy -- or at least relief -- that the family holds together in its traditonal form at all costs?
One thought, an admittedly simplistic one in light of your sophisticated ponderings, in this regard: I've always felt that problems in relationships are always the same, regardless of the equation of sexes and genders. It all boils down to truth and trust.
But what do I know? I'm a straight girl. Or am I...?
