I am working on putting together a display of Gothic fiction this morning. I went to wikipedia, since they are so often good at putting together useful bibliographies and other lists and links.

While there, I ran across a strange coupling. In the "see also" section, right underneath "Southern Gothic" there was this: Southern Ontario GothicThis ( Read more... )

Hahaha! I was waxing lit'rary, wasn't I? You just made me gut-laugh here at work because of course Toronto's bearfolk come highly recommended and I definitely plan to rub shoulders with 'em.

If you don't mind, though, excuse me when I'm partyin' and lapse into dorky excess. :)

(Thanks for the nudge, bub!)

For some reason when I read this, I thought you typed "Poland" instead of "Portland" and I got all excited cos you know about my Polish heritage and all and I was going to -- well, first, gasp! -- and then ask you to pick me up one of them there novels and I was already constructing comparisons between the texts and those handpainted eggs and ... .

*breathe*

Baroque is so HOT!

(Pssst!: I'm kind of excitable today. Can you tell?!)

Kinda!!! LOL... YAY!!!! You know, you can't make a Polish omlette without baroquing some painted eggs...

I now have the Indigo Girl's "Yeild" stuck in my head....

"Yeah you were so baroque
All of those words
just to tell me no..."

Mmmmmmmm... Cofffeeeeeee..

Definitely read Margaret Atwood but please don't neglect her more recent work. And remember, she has a sense of humour, and is not afraid to use it.

Did you read Oryx and Crake? It sounded interesting to me, but I've not yet gotten around to reading it.

For me, Atwood the novelist is at her best with Alias Grace.

For a taste of Toronto that isn't quite as well-known, you might try to track down a copy of Dionne Brand's In Another Place, Not Here or Anne Michaels' Fugitive Pieces.

Thanks for the suggestions, Paul! Embarrassed to say I haven't read a lick of Atwood at this point and so will gladly take the direction. I'll check on these other two titles today at work, too!

Sorry: I seem to keep getting lost with your email address. Could you possibly email it to me at omphaloser(at)aol(dot)com? Wanted to ask you about something if I could. Thanks!
