Xuihcoatl is freaking awesome and you've definitely done him(it?) justice here. i love the flames! i wouldn't have ever thought of flames, though you're right that it does logically follow the sun beam idea.
If one has to have a magical weapon, pass up the dime-a-dozen swords, go for the snake on fire. :)
Xuihcoatl as I've depicted them (I don't know their gender either, though it's probably male) here, is quite a bit of my own interpretation as a novice scholar of Aztec mythology. I don't know for sure if it really is on fire, but they're a god's weapon and it's a good indication of just how powerful they'd be.
