Cho Kyuhyun laid on his bed in his quiet apartment, staring at the ceiling tiles. There were 487 and a half of them. It both pleased and annoyed him that he had managed to count them all. But despite knowing the exact number of ceiling tiles in his bedroom, he still could not get Zhou Mi out of his head.

Why had he kissed him? What on earth had made the lab technician do something so completely unprofessional and shocking? What had made him do something so simple and perfect that hours later Kyuhyun’s lips were still tingling from a single tiny peck?

“Sleep. Now. I command you.” He ordered his confused and exhausted brain. But rather than complying, it spun off in yet another twirling pattern of thoughts. Had Zhou Mi kissed him to shut him up when he had been ranting? Or was the kiss an indication that Zhou Mi really did like Kyuhyun and was trying to say without words that he wanted to date him?

Panic suffused through his body at the idea of dating Zhou Mi. DATING? Cho Kyuhyun did not date. Cho Kyuhyun worked nearly sixty hours a week and had no time in his life for someone else. Cho Kyuhyun ate alone, worked alone, and slept alone.

And yet, for some inexplicable reason, he suddenly began to think of all those elderly people in the park he had seen a few weeks ago. All those people had someone to love, and how he had realized that he would never have that. Was that true anymore? He didn’t know. For the first time in his life, he didn’t know the answer to a question.

He rolled over, staring woefully at the clock on the nightstand. They had called it a night and had left the morgue at 1:30am. Zhou Mi had smiled at him and said he would see him in the morning. Kyuhyun had pointed out that it already was morning. Zhou Mi had just laughed with an amused look in his eyes and walked away. Kyuhyun had returned to his apartment and climbed into bed. The clock now read 4:34am, and he knew he had to be back at the morgue for 8am. Usually he was there at 6am, but this morning he knew he needed at least a little bit of sleep in order to be fully focused and alert.

Finally, he gave up and went to the bathroom, taking out the little tiny green and blue pills that helped him sleep when he wasn’t able to turn off his 180 IQ brain. He shook one into his palm, swallowed it and dragged himself back to bed. He was asleep within minutes.

~~~
It wasn’t until 9am that Cho Kyuhyun arrived at the morgue, feeling flustered and annoyed at himself for oversleeping. He slammed through the doors, threw down his briefcase on his desk and glared at Zhou Mi as if his lie-in had been all his fault. In a roundabout sort of way, it had been, but Zhou Mi didn’t know that. He only smiled brightly at Kyuhyun and handed him his lab coat.
“Morning, sunshine.” He chirped happily, and Kyuhyun snatched the coat from him, yanking it on with forceful irritation.
“I have never been late to work a day in my entire LIFE!” Kyuhyun practically roared. Zhou Mi smiled mildly and sipped his Starbucks coffee, which smelled like cinnamon and mocha heaven. Kyuhyun’s stomach grumbled from lack of breakfast, because he had awoken at 8:37 and had spent the next fifteen minutes running at top speed to get himself to the morgue before Zhou Mi. It hadn’t worked, but at least Zhou Mi looked as if he had only arrived minutes before Kyuhyun anyway.
“Did you sleep well at least?” Zhou Mi asked, watching Kyuhyun storm around the lab, flipping on his computer and turning on his beloved machines.
“No. Yes. ARGH I don’t know!” Kyuhyun sat in his chair and began glaring at the computer screen.
“I slept wonderfully. Thanks for asking.” Zhou Mi winked, slipping into his chair and gracefully taking a lab slip from his inbox.
Kyuhyun could feel his face beginning to burn in shame. His mother would have kicked him around this room if she had known he had been so rude. He cleared his throat, took a deep breath and looked across the room at his lab technician.
“Did you? That’s wonderful.” He paused. “Why did you kiss me?” He blurted out. As soon as the words were out of his mouth, he stared openmouthed at his own question. The words hung there for a moment in midair, and he scrambled mentally to shove them back in his mouth. Zhou Mi smiled a warm, kind, and somewhat amused smile that made Kyuhyun’s stomach flip and his chest squeeze.
“I wanted to.” Zhou Mi said simply, and then he turned back to his screen, effectively ending the conversation. Kyuhyun blinked at him, and for what seemed like the hundredth time, his brain was only able to locate and utter one word.
“Oh.”
~~~~~~~~

Zhou Mi was tired, but he was no longer teetering on the edge of begging Choi Siwon to transfer him to another department. In fact, he was finding that the smile on his face was nearly constant all morning long. A kiss and a good night’s sleep had done wonders for his mood, and he bulldozed through the remaining lab slips in his box like they were butter.

By noon, Zhou Mi could hear the man’s stomach growling from across the room. He stood up and came over, placing one hand on Kyuhyun’s desk to lean against it, watching Kyuhyun as the man typed so fast that his fingers were a blur on the keyboard. After a few minutes, Kyuhyun looked up at him, but rather than his normal look of frustration, there was confusion and even hesitancy in his eyes.

“What?” He asked.

“It’s noon.” Zhou Mi said, as if this was obvious what that meant.

“And?” Kyuhyun frowned.

“It’s lunchtime, Kui Xian.”

“Oh.” Kyuhyun looked at the clock with a frown.

“Come to lunch with me. We should get outside. It’s gorgeous out today.”

“It is?” Kyuhyun said, his eyes drawn back to the screen as he tried to process some information while still pretending to be listening to his lab tech.

“Yes. It is. Come on, we’re going to get some food and then we’re going to sit outside and eat. And THEN we can come back and play with the dead people again.”

“I don’t…” Kyuhyun began, but Zhou Mi was already pulling him up out of his chair, even as he was protesting. “I really don’t think--”

“Stop thinking. It’s lunch, not a date.” Zhou Mi said, and Kyuhyun’s mouth fell open until he managed to shut it again. He watched Kyuhyun’s mouth fall open, and he wanted to laugh, because the poor socially inept man looked so shocked at those words. This was far too much fun.

He dragged Kyuhyun out of the morgue, up the elevator and into the lobby. The hospital was busy today, and Kyuhyun looked halfway between uncomfortable and murderous as Zhou Mi pulled him through the crowd, chattering to him about the beautiful weather and calling out greetings to other hospital employees.

Zhou Mi wondered if Kyuhyun even knew any of these people at all, because while they all smiled at him, but nobody greeted or said anything to Kyuhyun as they exited the hospital. Zhou Mi wondered if Siwon hadn’t been joking at all when he said that Kyuhyun rarely left the morgue other than to go home.

The moment they were outside, Zhou Mi stopped and inhaled, taking in the gorgeous summer air and the sweet breeze that rippled over his skin. He didn’t mind dead bodies, but to be out here was to truly be alive, and he loved it. He loved the sun and he loved the smells of the restaurants nearby, cooking up delicious meals for the people. He stretched like a cat in the sunlight and sighed, relieved to be out of the morgue and in the fresh air.

He turned to ask Kyuhyun to ask him what he wanted to eat for lunch, but Kyuhyun was staring at him, his whole face filled with wonder. Zhou Mi blinked for a second, wondering what on earth Kyuhyun was staring at him like that for.

“Kui Xian? Are you all right?” He asked, frowning a little, wondering if perhaps the sunlight was going to turn Kyuhyun into some creepy Gollum-ish creature. But Kyuhyun only shook himself and looked away, and he didn't miss the blush on Kyuhyun's cheeks.

“Oh, it really is nice out.” He observed, and Zhou Mi laughed.

“Come on, I’m in the mood for kimbap and bulgogi.” He smiled, tugging Kyuhyun through the crowd towards a nearby street vendor.

They ordered their food and went to the park. Kyuhyun had a certain bench he preferred above the others, and Zhou Mi allowed him this one idiosyncrasy. They sat and watched the people in the park as they ate, and Zhou Mi told Kyuhyun about his little dog, Ni Qiu. He laughed when Kyuhyun asked him how he could possibly have a pet when they require so much attention and…. cleaning.

“I cannot waste my time wandering around after canines and cleaning up their bowel movements.” Kyuhyun stated loudly, earning him a few alarmed looks from other people passing by.

Zhou Mi, knowing Kyuhyun like a roadmap by now, would have expected no less. He threw his head back and laughed out loud, despite the shocked look on Kyuhyun’s face.

“Oh my God, Kui Xian you are so funny!” Zhou Mi laughed, his eyes bright with amusement.

“No I’m not.” Kyuhyun muttered, looking suddenly embarrassed. Without thinking, Zhou Mi leaned in and kissed him again, because it was sunny outside, and he was happy, and he wanted to share it with Kyuhyun.

When he pulled away, he was thrilled to see that Kyuhyun was eyeing him like he was a mathematical equation that needed solving. “Do that again.” He said, turning to face Zhou Mi on the bench. His face was contorted as if this was some big adventure he was making a map for. Zhou Mi smiled and leaned in, ghosting his lips once more over Kyuhyun’s.

This time, Kyuhyun kissed him back. With all the inexperience and excitement of someone discovering a new cure for cancer, Kyuhyun kissed him, stealing the air from Zhou Mi’s lungs. His mind slipped into something buzzing and pleasant as they kissed. It didn’t matter that they were in a park full of people in the middle of the day, far away from the morgue and who they were to each other.

When Kyuhyun pulled away, all Zhou Mi could say was;

“Oh.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They returned to the morgue with smiles on their faces. Kyuhyun hadn’t smiled this much in his whole life, and while it felt odd, and slightly terrifying, it was also exhilarating. He had kissed Zhou Mi, and Zhou Mi had responded. He had no idea what it meant, or where it would take him, but for the first time in what seemed like forever, he was alive.
But the morgue sobered their joyful mood as they returned to work and the grisly task of another autopsy. They quietly fell back into their established routine and set to work.
It was a long, grueling afternoon, but Kyuhyun and Zhou Mi were buoyed by their warm kiss in the sunlight, and they managed to work through the autopsy with grace and ease. By the time they were done it was nearly seven pm, and the evidence they had collected on this third body was overwhelming. Zhou Mi spent the next two hours carefully documenting, photographing, and examining the evidence while Kyuhyun tried to piece it together.
They spoke about their ideas, coming up with a few scenarios that always seemed to fit nearly everything but the key. The tiny golden key was locked in the evidence drawers, it’s presence an odd clue in what would have normally been an easy case.
At ten pm they had finally finished prepping the victims bodies for release for burial. They cleaned up, notified Siwon had of their findings so they could be immediately scanned to the police and FBI. It was a little before 11pm when they finally decided to call it a night. Zhou Mi glanced morosely at the huge pile of lab slips that had accumulated on his desk during the autopsy, but Kyuhyun shook his head. For once, he spoke quietly.
“Let it sit until tomorrow. We should get some sleep.”
“What about you?” Zhou Mi asked, pulling on his coat and shutting off his computer.
“I have one more thing I need to do. I’ll be going home soon too.” Kyuhyun said, and Zhou Mi could see that another idea had come to him. He smiled and headed for the elevator, wondering if he would return in the morning to find that Kyuhyun had never left at all. He made a mental note to bring Kyuhyun coffee and a bagel in the morning.
Zhou Mi pressed the button for the elevator, and kissed Kyuhyun on the cheek. “Goodnight then, Kui Xian.” He said, smiling as Kyuhyun blushed yet again.
“Goodnight, Zhou Mi.” He answered with a smile. They stood there awkwardly waiting for the elevator doors to open. Zhou Mi wanted to kiss him again, but the somber atmosphere made it impossible. The tension began to build and he was relieved when they heard the ding and the elevator doors slid open.
But to their surprise, the elevator was not empty. A huge man dressed in a dark suit emerged, his face a mass of scars and terrible look of angry determination on his ugly face. They stared at him in shock for all of a second before he grabbed Zhou Mi around the neck and pulled hard, yanking the slim man against his chest. Zhou Mi let out a yelp of shock and immediately tried to fight, pushing against the man as he struggled to get away. Kyuhyun reacted instantly, surging forward to pull Zhou Mi away from the giant man before he could hurt him.
“What are you doing?” He shouted, yelling at the man as he ran at him. But time seemed to stop dead as a glint of silver appeared. They heard the click of the safety come off the gun as it pressed hard against Zhou Mi’s temple. Kyuhyun and Zhou Mi both froze in horror as the man spoke.
“Give me the key or he dies.”
