I'm not going to have that done until January, I think. Partially because in my mind its not as important as the ultra-sonic cleansing, and partly because I want to be aware for the New Years Holidays.
Also, it tastes disgusting, but clove oil is a very effective natural remedy for mouth pain. When I had my wisdom teeth out, my very progressive surgeon soothed the pain with tiny bits of cotton soaked in clove oil on the incision sites. You might try a diluted rinse. Google for more info.

Did the same deal - didn't go to a dentist for years, and...
Had a crown done two months ago. Just had another crown replaced and a filling replaced on Monday. Eye-poppingly outrageous price, even WITH insurance. My mouth is still sore.
However, since I'd been using a tartar-control toothpaste and flossing a couple times per week all along, the cleaning was not such an issue.
