Not long after that I found a cassette tape in a used record store. It was an African sampler. I don't remember who the artists were, but it was some amazing stuff. Ever since I've been hooked. People like Brenda Fassie, Baaba Maal, Angélique Kidjo, Youssou N'Dour, Salif Keita and Tinariwen put me in wonderful place when I listen to them.
Even though there are so many different styles of African music, from the funkiest township jive to the most ethereal kora and driving Amazag blues, there is something at the core of African music that sets it apart as unique from anything else in the world.
