My thinking was that if you are unprepared for a gunfight you might die, but if people are still having knifefights, and you goad them into escalating to gunfights, you and all your friends are way more likely to die in the future.
That's not what it makes me think of. Besides, why would there be a proverb that means "don't overprepare [in a way that will undoubtedly lead to success]?" You're right that if you read it that way, it's a no-brainer.
Bringing a knife to a gunfight allows you to finish someone off in style after taking him down with your gun. It also provides backup if your gun jams, and a means to cut bandages if you get winged in the process of capping the punkass who called you out.
Bringing a gun to a knifefight, though, guarantees that you're going to get hunted down and destroyed by your opponent's kin. Why couldn't you stick to the rules, rather than escalating this into full blown war?
