hotel-related question

May 24, 2009 13:57

I'm paying out of pocket for lodging on my trip to the International Positive Psychology Association World Congress, and there don't seem to be any options close to the Philadelphia convention center for under $120 a night. I know that's low for a hotel room in that city and that location, but it still bums me out. I don't even want to go to this ( Read more... )

Try hotwire.com in combination with http://www.betterbidding.com -- there's a 1:1 relationship between hotels and the amenities they list. A quick glance at hotels in that area for 6/18-6/21 suggests you can save some money.

Try a hostel? Looks like the Apple Hostel of Philadelphia is very nearby.

Thanks for the advice! I'm a big fan of hostels and I totally agree with the idea. I'm done with my days of staying in hostel dorms, though -- they're too variable, and conferences are pretty hard when I don't get a good night's sleep. Before I posted this I'd checked Apple and Ucity hostel for private rooms, but neither had anything available (Ucity's page is just a phone number for a guy who doesn't call back). I'll definitely keep the faith in other cities I travel to.

Ah, thanks for reminding me of them. I discounted them after the one time I made couchsurfing arrangements and things went really badly, but that probably isn't fair, seeing that I didn't plan ahead sufficiently, or make backup plans like they tell you, over and over, to make sure you do.

I was going to recommend the Alexander Inn as an inexpensive hotel option, but I see that they have the low price you'd already found.

It sounds like you found what you were looking for on betterbidding.com -- I was going to say that I've had good luck with Priceline. Unless there's a huge convention in town, you can often get 40-50% off published rates.

I worked in the hotel industry twice, but I'm afraid I don't have any personal accounts or information to make the industry more sympathetic. Both experiences were pretty soul-crushing.

Okay, I'll take that as two votes for crushing them right back (just maybe being less angry when i do it). Thank you for commenting.
