Do men ever get asked "Do you need to ask your wife's permission before making that decision?" I've been asked this three times in the last week about my non existent husband with regards to housing. We will not be using the companies in question.

There are things people ask without thinking.
They are not intentionally offensive. Nor naturally stupid just remarkably thoughtless.

I have had complete strangers be incredibly rude, personal and insulting about our unintended childlessness- after all they perhaps read something in a magazine once so they are Obviously the experts.

The modern world has eroded some of our privacy a little too much - just as well you are a lovely person or there may be a few bruised noses around!

Try being an unmarried stepmother! (We can't afford to get married yet else we so would!)

We've had so many embarrassing silences when people try to work out just what kind of a family we are!

We just laugh it off... X

I agree with caffeine_fairy, to some extent. It is partially because people are idiots-and idiots in the specific way that means they project their life/world experiences onto every situation they are in. So if they would ask their husband (or believe that their wife would ask them), then it becomes an automatic question (almost a 'do you want fries with that?' response).

I wonder how many wives/female partner actually ask their other halves to the extent that the (highlighted above) male partner thinks they do.
