benzai_ten "tagged" me to do a "six current favorite songs" meme.

I don't know about "favorites", that changes very regularly, but here are some that have been on my mind in the last few days:

1)"Carolina in the Morning" It's one of the old standards that even those who generally have no contact with pre-rock music sort-of know ("Nothing could be finer/ ( Read more... )

I'm a young aspiring trad jazz drummer who is considering moving to new orleans in about a year. What is the jazz scene like there? I hear that some musicians dont fair too well if they dont know the right people, is that true? Just curious about that town down the river.

There are a small number of places that care about quality the traditional style and regularly hire good bands, and many more that hire whatever they can get cheap.

I'm not a musician (I don't play for a living), but am friends with a few excellent local musicans, and a number of even the best either have to scramble to make a living (often playing tours & festivals out-of-town) or get a day job.

If you love trad jazz and are intreged by New Orleans, I'd say come on down for an extended visit before deciding if you wish to move here. I don't know what you're looking for and if the city would have it or not, but it should have some things of interest at least.

There are lots of opportunities for irregular gigs and jamming and such, but not for making a living playing.

After seeing your username, I had to look at your LJ. I love "Carolina;" I learned it in 4th grade music class along with the "Rock Island Line" and "Erie Canal." All of which, I can still sing.

Also, I really do like Balling the Jack. Bonus, everyone thinks you're being really vulgar if you say it.

Hiya!

[Froggy looks at your LJ] Yay, librarian.

Hm, looks like we were in the same audience for at least 3 things first JazzFest Saturday.

I happened to be at the rehersal where the New Leviathan first went over "Ballin' The Jack". Half the band were apparently previously unfamiliar with it, and there were many giggling fits.

Did anyone every write a full chorus of parody lyrics, or did no one ever get beyond the first pair of couplets for the naughty lyrics?
