He said things like "The problem in defense is how far you can go without destroying from within what you are trying to defend from without." I've occasionally wondered what the reaction to Eisenhower's Farewell Address was at the time. Shock and horror? "The old man's gone mad! MAD!" "NOW he tells us"?

My dad, who was about 20 at the time, remarked the other day when I asked him about it that Ike warned us about the MI complex after having spent eight years building it up.

(ooh, that is an ugly ugly sentence. But I won't do anything about it nosirree.)

Another Eisenhower quote: "If men can develop weapons that are so terrifying as to make the thought of global war include almost a sentence for suicide, you would think that man's intelligence and his comprehension... would include also his ability to find a peaceful solution."

Hivemind-edly enough, I went to the Eisenhower Museum on Friday. Lots of WWII vets there, as they get in for free during the anniversary of D-Day. I appreciate what you say about Ike, and the "Every gun that is made, every warship launched..." quote was one of three in the mausoleum where Ike's laid to rest. The main theme in Ike's life was that he was a pacifist at heart. But the whole time I was in the museum I couldn't get over the fact that, for a man who supposedly hated war so much, he sure loved a good war.
