Great band. I played on a bill with Tommy Sancton about three years ago, at Dixon Hall at Tulane.
It's weird for me playing this stuff because I never aspired to play traditional jazz and still havent conciously sat down and tried to learn any tunes. I just go on gigs, they start playing, and I do the best I can. Consequently I 'know' a lot of tunes I don't know the names of.
Last fall I did a "concert" with the Louisiana Repertory Ensemble (some great players on that gig too; Duke Heitger, Tom Fischer, David Boddington, Robert Nunez, Rick Trolsen etc.). I was actually there mostly for the one 'reading' part of the program, a transcription of the Sam Morgan recording of "Bogalusa Strut." But the key word was "program." They had a program, so I finally learned the names of a bunch of tunes I'd been playing by ear for several years. I was like, "oh, so THAT'S "Tin Roof Blues.":-P
