New Orleans on the Silver Screen

Two people on my LJ friends list have posted about Hollywood films using some good New Orleans scenery but having actors speak with "Southern" accents little like how New Orleanians talk. I agree -- Friends and I have been discussing and laughing about this for years ( Read more... )

I laughed at the Big Easy. That was so funny. As for Morgus, I have that on a DVD somewhere at home. Haven't had a chance to see the whole thing yet.

I liked Benjamin Button, though the accents in it were pretty much generic.

Don't remember seeing JFK, but probably have some time in the past.

Definitely remember The Savage Bees, with the Dome lowering its temperature so the bees could be frozen off the VW. Cheesy.

One film I'd like to see is the Charlton Heston football flick Number One. I've heard about it, but never seen it.

I grew up in Montana and although I cannot think of any specific examples, I have seen several movies set in Montana where people speak with southern accents. I mean movies where the characters are not from the south and just in Montana, at least they don't mention that. It would make sense for guys in Lonesome Dove to have a Texas twang once they get to Montana.

This is how I feel whenever I watch movies filmed in Las Vegas (or that horrid piece of crap TV show, CSI.) One moment they're driving on the Strip, the next they're at Binions downtown, then back on the Strip, etc., etc.

It's laughable.

Coming soon: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, starring Nicolas Cage, and directed by Werner Herzog. It was filmed in New Orleans, so we'll see what happens.
