Main Pairing/Focus: Dongwoo/Myungsoo
Rating: PG-13
Word count: 2418
Summary: It takes pain to learn a lesson.

It all happened so quickly. One moment he saw bright lights, the next he saw crimson. In a blink, he sees people hovering over him, and the next is a white ceiling. Pain suddenly shoots through his head as his brain registers where he is, and who those people there are. Doctors, nurses and his friends (he thinks, sight still fuzzy). It’s always those few same check-up procedures after you wake up, after the anesthetic wears off, that the doctors does before he leaves you in the room with your visitors.

Sunggyu remembers the words the doctor told him outside the room after the check-up, “he may have temporary partial memory loss. But the partial memory loss are most probably triggered by his emotions, and not because of the accident.”

“Myungsoo, do you remember us?”

“Why not? Aren’t you Sunggyu?” He lifts his index finger, pointing at the boy next to Sunggyu, “there’s Woohyun,” finger travelling to the next, “Hoya, and Sungjong. We’re all here. And I remem-”

The door flings open and in comes a boy with his dirty blonde hair sticking in all directions, “sorry guys, I came over as fast as I got Sunggyu’s message. Sup buddy!” He runs over to the bed and sticks his fist out, a cheesy grin plastered on his face.

“Bud... dy?” Myungsoo raises an eyebrow in question of the boy that suddenly ran in. “I’m sorry but,” he pauses, the smile on the boy falters, “who are you?”

And those were the three words that were etched in Dongwoo’s heart that hurt.

“So you were saying that I was in an accident, knocked my head and I’m having temporary partial memory lost right now and I’ll eventually remember it, right?” Myungsoo looks at the other five boys in the room, “is there anyone or anything else I should remember that I don't?”

Sungjong opens his mouth, “Su-” and before he could finish, he was elbowed at the ribs by Woohyun.

“Is there something you’re trying to say?” The raven hair boy eyes the brunette (and everyone knows how deadly the stare of his was, it kills.)

“No!” He squeaks, the stare sending chills down his spine and he hates it. The more the raven stares, the more the brunette curls up in his seat. The other boys just sat there and enjoyed the scene of the youngest being bullied. And the heroine of the day was the nurse who chased them out after visiting hours (which was almost half an hour after it started.)

The silence that came after the boys left was not a single bit comfortable. Myungsoo felt empty. It was as if he had lost something important. Actually, he did lose someone important, Sungyeol (and the memories he had with him.)

“He may forget events and people that had a negative impact on him.”

「Myungsoo ran over to the sandbox, bucket and shovel in hand, a large smile stuck on his face. As he was in the midst of building a sandcastle, a boy (who resembles a dinosaur) came running over and kicked it down.

“Roar! I am a Dongwooasaur! I will uhm... Eat you!!" The boy shouted, laughing at the end. Myungsoo only sat there and glared at the boy annoyed, because he destroyed his sandcastle. 」

And that was how they first met.
「“Hurry up!” The younger called out, slowly jogging backwards as he urged the older to catch up with him. “You know you don't want to fail your mile run!”

“Psst, Dongwoo,” the youger hissed, “what is the answer for question three?” A smack landed on his head, turning around he saw his teacher glaring at him.

“Kim Myungsoo, no cheating. Jang Dongwoo! Wake up!” 」

And how school life was for them.
「“Dongwoo! Wake up! You don’t want to be late for your first day at college!” Myungsoo kicked the older boy’s side, making him roll over and off the mattress. “Why are you the older and smarter one again?” he murmured to himself.

Two eggs, sunny side up, a bacon and a sausage. Two buttered slices of toast with strawberry jam. Served freshly to the half awake Dongwoo, prepared by his truly, Myungsoo. 」

And an unknown reason why they are best friends.
Myungsoo opens his eyes, staring at the ceiling, the white burning his eyes. Are the dreams, dreams? Or are they memories, slowly coming back to him, one by one? The dream was fuzzy, cutting straight to the main points, with the others just appearing like it was already there. Since Dongwoo is his best friend, why did he forget about him? He closes his eyes and decides to take in the beeping sounds of the machines, before he drifts to sleep again. This time, without any dreams occurring.

Meanwhile, Dongwoo was back at home flipping through a photo album. Yellowed pictures of both him and Myungsoo enjoying what they did when they were small, beside every photo was a neatly penned short description. Every photo album of them growing up on the shelf, was the work of their parents, documented with photos taken by the fathers, neatly stuck on and penned down by the mothers. Dongwoo went through every single album, till the last, where it was left half completed on their trip to the amusement park when Myungsoo was eleven, and he was thirteen. The year their parents left, to the same place Sungyeol went, a day ago.

“Tell me, you’ll at least remember me?” Tears stained his pillow as he went to bed.

「“Dongwoo, it’s your chance. It didn’t come easy, I know that. Don’t loose it.” Sungyeol whispered, clad in white. Everywhere was white, but it was those white that wasn’t blinding. It was comforting and warm in a way. “He loves you more than me. Be there for him forever will you? I wish I can do more for him...” Sungyeol slumped down on the floor and sighed, lower lip jutting out in a cute way. “Don’t hesitate anymore, hesitating leads to something else.” The white slowly faded into black, Sungyeol disappearing together with the white. “Remember Dongwoo, three days.”」

Dongwoo opens his eyes, realisation hit him. Myungsoo needs him, he always needed him. Sungyeol was just a replacement in Myungsoo’s heart (but he never knew that.) He went over to the corner of the room, lifted the stack of books aside and picked up the folded piece of paper underneath. Between the two sides were a few pressed petals of a red rose flattened under the weight of his books. He had that for quite a while, and had no use of it, till now.

“And something else is usually something bad.”

Myungsoo wakes up the next day, a rose on his bed side table. He picks it up, hoping to find any clue of who left it. However, he only found a spot of crimson on his white blanket. Blood is oozing out from his thumb where the rose thorn pierced through his flesh. His head starts throbbing, images starts to flash in his head. It’s flickering so fast between scenes of somebody crashing lips with him, to an incoming truck, and a image of a person lying lifeless on the ground with a pool of blood around him. That last image made his heart squeeze, not because of the goriness, but because it felt as if that person was someone important to him. But who is he?

The nurse leaves the room with a new vase placed on the bedside table, and a plaster on his thumb. Sunggyu and Woohyun came in an hour later with Sungjong, bringing fruits with them. They did not stay long, chatting for an hour or so, (bringing back more memories of Dongwoo) before leaving Sungjong behind to head for classes.

“So, what were you going to say last night?” He asks the younger boy. “Don't say there's nothing because obviously there is something.” He cocks his head sideways, still staring at the boy, waiting for an answer.

“Su- Sung- Sungyeol...” Sungjong looks down at his fingers in his lap, “he’s someone very important to you.” He looked back up at Myungsoo, to see a blank face.

「Sungyeol's hand emitting a warm fuzzy feeling on his thigh as they sat comfortably next to each other on the park bench. Enjoying the silence of the park and the occasional rustling of the leaves of the trees when a breeze comes by. Pink tinted both their cheeks, a lingering feeling of sweetness and warmth on their lips. As what everyone says, firsts kisses are sweet. 」

And a certain Dongwoo was eavesdropping from the door.
「“Myung-... soo.” Dongwoo stopped in his tracks at the sight of the couple kissing on the park bench right in front of him. He took a few steps back, tears welling up in his eyes, before sprinting back home, tears streaming down his cheeks. ‘Why am I doing this to myself, knowing he doesn't like me?’」

“So, Sungyeol is my boyfriend?”

“Yes.”

“If he is my boyfriend, why isn’t he here?”

“He’s... gone.”

「It all happened on a random school day, the day a new random kid transferred in. Tall, skinny, some what pale, charming smile, chubby cheeks paired with geeky glasses. Not exactly Myungsoo’s cup of tea, but he did catch his attention for the childish act he did in the class they shared.

“Hello! My name is Lee Sungyeol. YEAH!” Which the boy ended off with a crazy dance and random owl calls. It just so appeared that he was Woohyun’s friend. Who clings to him, and his group of friends. Annoying yet cute. 」

And everything in between goes fuzzy, as if it is telling that it is better if it came later.
「“Dongwoo,” the raven boy asked, “what if I liked someone?” Myungsoo continued to stare at his friend, boring holes through his back.

“Then go all out for it!” The other boy turned around, giving his trademark smile.

“But what if he already have someone he liked?” The younger continued to questioned.

“That, I don’t know.”」

And not knowing anything, he decided to give up.
Dongwoo sat on his desk, squinting through his glasses, trying to get cut a piece of paper to perfection. He glanced over to the vase of fresh roses at the side, smiled to himself, before continuing on the work.

The next morning, another rose came, anonymously as before. This time, Myungsoo was more careful of the thorns. But still not careful enough to get pricked again.

「Myungsoo heard a crash coming from the living room, being curious in nature, he decided to take a peek at how Hoya and Dongwoo were at their project. All he saw was Hoya right on top of Dongwoo, lips connected, hands all over. The love for Dongwoo the boy had, was crushed in just a second. 」

And that was when he decided that its better to give up.
The day passed, with random jolts of memory piecing together. Myungsoo (thought that he) had already given up and was Sungyeol’s. But he still does not remember how the accident happened.

And Dongwoo never shows up that day.

「It was Dongwoo’s birthday party. Everyone was high, and enjoying themselves. Sungjong was all over Hoya, Woohyun was flirting around, and Sunggyu was trying his best to relax. The only two who kept off the alcohol was Sungyeol and Myungsoo. There needs to be someone to clean up any mess, or keep them out off the mess.

And after all the guests had left, it was just Myungsoo and Dongwoo left in the apartment. (or so they think) Dongwoo starts getting clingy, hands all over Myungsoo. And before the younger can react, he landed his lips on him, pushing Myungsoo to the wall with a loud bang. It was rough, yet gentle, a taste of alcohol and something uniquely Dongwoo. Myungsoo pushed him off, but the temptation was not helping, it was after all something he had wanted. (and Dongwoo is pretty strong) He started kissing back, and fireworks sparked off in his head when Dongwoo started nibbling on his lower lip. Dongwoo suddenly pulled back, only to whisper “I love you” and crashed his lips back, tongue trying to gain dominance in the other boy’s mouth. 」

And that was when everything started to be confusing.
「He sees Sungyeol sitting on a tree, he was wearing all white. The place looked oddly familiar, like it was the park. He glanced at Sungyeol, who just told him to move on, its not use to blame himself for what had happened.」

He found a card on his bed side table that morning instead. A few pressed rose petal stuck on nicely to the cover, with a thin film of plastic protecting it, intricate designed boarders surrounds it. In the card, it wrote:

‘I love you.’
He knew of only one person, Dongwoo. And just as he was about to put it down, he accidentally got a paper cut.

And the final memory to clear everything up.
「Americano in one, Myungsoo’s hand in another, the couple walked down the empty early morning park, taking in the breathtaking early snow scene in front of them.

“Myungsoo, I know you love Dongwoo, why did you even pick me?”

“I...”

“I saw it last night, but it’s okay. I get you. I am actually using you too.”

“What do you mean?”

“I like Woohyun, but apparently like you, I saw him kissing Sunggyu in our apartment. Like how you witnessed Hoya on Dongwoo.”

“So...?”

“Even if we have mutual feelings for each other, its not as if we are being true to ourselves. Because our hearts are already with another person.”

It was then when they were waiting to cross the road where a truck suddenly went off lane and straight at them. It was then when Sungyeol pushed him off the pavement, to be struck by the truck. It was then Myungsoo realised that he had been a fool, he had been running away because he did not bother trying. He was to blame. And that guilt made him black out. 」

And that was when he learnt what was called never giving up.
The door flings open, and in walks Dongwoo.

“You ready to go back?” The older asks.

“Sure, boyfriend.” The younger smiles at him.
