Writer's Block: Idiomatic Confusion

"A stitch in time saves nine."

If anyone knows what that means, by all means, let me know.

I do get "a canary in a coal mine" though.  Back in the day, coal miners would bring a canary into the mines with them.  If poisonous gas was present, the canary would quickly die since its lungs are so small.  This was a signal to the coal miners to get ( Read more... )

I know! When you're knitting (or, presumably, weaving or sewing) and you miss a stitch, you wind up needing to undo or redo your work, and basically doing a bunch more to fix it. So, making one stitch when you need to saves you from doing a bunch more later on.

When you only have a little whole in your socks on stitch will fix it if you waite you will need nine or more stitches
