Events and student budgets.

*sigh* SCA events are fun. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I can justify the over 88 pound cost of going to one at the end of May. (The event itself is well priced. The cost of travel and realization that I brought no feast gear with me is making it suck).

*Is mopey because she'll be missing Pikeman's for the first time.*

Would this be Winchester Pilgrimage?
If you have to choose one for the year (or the season) I recommend Winchester. Beautiful authentic site, cool event activities, magical atmosphere. Very, very hard to beat, really. Worth eating cheap noodles for a week for!

Feast gear is reasonably easy to come by - just ask the steward nicely.

Missing favourites at home is hard though, absolutely; Pikemans' was one of my favourite events for many years too.

This would indeed be the Winchester Pilgrimage. I think I'm going to go, stingey as I am. It looks really fun! I think what will be the deciding factor is whether there's still crash space available at the site. (heck, even if there isn't I may decide to just get a room somewhere. I just realise I haven't been to a single SCA thing since I got here in October, and I do miss it.)

remember:
barley is cheap
onions are cheap
dried lentils are cheap
dried beans are cheap (I recommend the black turtle beans,as rehydrated kidney beans take forever and have a weird texture)
frozen peas/frozen mixed veggies. once again cheap.
eggs. cheap compared to other protein sources.

It is in fact quite possible to live off of such for an extended period of time with no ill nutritional effects, and as long as you use different herbs and spices, and cook the eggs different ways, you get the necessary variation so you don't bore yourself to death too much.

Better tasting, better for you, and roughly the same price range as the good brand of ramen. (a little more expensive, but the 'better tasting and better for you' part easily evens out this, as you'll be able to go for longer eating it without getting bored or feeling sick)

Things I learned from the year of extreme brokeness, on how to feed oneself and still afford the occasional special event. ^_^
