*bursts into giggles* It's a whole conspiracy against Alanna and she can't do anything about it. The characterization is great. Alanna comes through wonderfully and Thayet seems particularly clear. This is brilliant!

It's a conspiracy to piss Alanna off... they have no intention of actually following through on it! Although perhaps they're holding up traditional vows and white dresses as a distraction, so that they can get on with planning the rest of a formal wedding for her.

Well, that was the text from the marriage of a Queen Regnant, so the man's half of the text probably had an oath to obey his wife. I like to think it did ;).
