I'm an American citizen, and I'm going to a barbecue where I will eat burgers and hot dogs and apple pie and yes- then I will go see fireworks on the national mall ( Read more... )

I'm too much of a cynic whose been beaten by America far too much. I'm not able to celebrate the fourth of July b/c I am not able to get past the hypocrisy of it, but I do understand the sentiments you are reflecting on. Every country is flawed, true. But as an American I will demand more from my country b/c that's what everyone should do.

The last time I went to celebrate the fourth I was in college and we had just gone to war and I couldn't get past how the fireworks sounded like bombs falling from the sky and I couldn't get past our need to blow shit up in the name of freedom. It made me sick to my stomach. I don't know. I think that's why I hated DC so much...I couldn't stomach the hypocrisy found in our nation's capital. *sigh*

Sorry to be a dower, lol. I do hope you have a lovely weekend, hon!

And new Doctor Who tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't totally disagree. I'll admit I enjoy the food and love fireworks- I didn't grow up getting to see firework shows too much so it's still a bit of a novelty.

But I do see the hypocrisy- and seeing it, I have to think I can change things. Deep down, I don't know what I really believe, but I've got to think it... Or I wouldn't be able to do what I do.
