Heart pounds. Stomach clenches. This is how it is supposed to be. You are with her. And I am with him. We were always meant to say goodbye.
I knew the day was coming. When we would say goodbye. It hangs overhead. A constant blot on the horizon. Always arriving faster than expected.
It was a fling. Relieve the tension. Nothing more. It would be nothing more. It was not meant to become more.
You lay in my arms that last night. Know we will never be together again. Feel my heart break. Unexpected tears threaten to fall. Arms hold you tighter. Breath uneven. Find I am wishing for more. Of this. Of you.
Know the morning must come. That the night will succumb to the dominance of light. The darkest light.
I do not recall the past. Not memories of past encounters. Nor dreams of futures trysts. I hold on to the moment. This instant we are in. Here. Holding you to my breast. Your breathing shallow. Small smile upon your lips.
I know this was always meant to end. We were never meant to be together. Yet still it hurts. The ache in my chest palpable.
I long to say those words she will say. To whisper the sweet nothings you long to hear.
Wish I could be your always. Did not know until that moment. It had become more.
Eyes close. Hope you are gone before I wake. Pray you will still be there. Without you beside me. A blessing and a curse. Spare us the awkwardness of goodbyes. The sadness of farewells. The joy of one last kiss. The pleasure in a long lingering touch. That smile I have come to love. To live for.
Bird song rouses me. Eyes refuse to open. Know the night is over. Our last moment lost to memory.
Feel the pressure of you at my chest. The warmth of your embrace.
You shift. Softly. Silently. Know you plan to leave before I wake.
To let you go. To hold you tighter. To tell you of always.
I take the brave but cowards way.
My arms allow you freedom. Grip loosens. You do not move. Your lingering spurs me on. To bravery. To opening my eyes.
We stayed that way for an eternity. For moments stretching out to years. We had our always. Our forever.
You reach up. Placing soft kisses along my jaw. Lips eventually meet. And yet in an instant gone. Our last kiss done. Last moment shared. The last of ours.
We move apart. Some hidden source separates us. Yet holds us together still.
We part. One last glance. Another memory for another day.
We will not visit this place again. Not for a long time. We will take our leave and bury it somewhere. Take our partners and move on. Get along. Keep it hidden.
One day I will take it out. When older, wiser. Sitting alone. In a dark room. And I will remember. And I will hold you close once more. Recall this night. This always. I will smile. I will cry. And then I will replace it.
