I was ambivalent when I first heard about the arrest in Switzerland, mainly because I thought that the sentence he was most likely running away from was life in prison, which is pretty much the going rate nowadays for sex with a minor. And it seemed like he hadn't done it since then, which isn't the most ringing endorsement, I know, but trading life in prison for a lifetime exile from the USA and staying clean seemed to be a passable compromise.
My opinion changed radically when I found out he initially ran away from a 90 day sentence, almost half of which he had already served. Which means if he had just stayed in the USA and done his time when it all happened to begin with, rather than fleeing the country like a whining coward, he'd have gotten off incredibly light, given the gravity of what he did

Well it hardly helps that Woody Allen (inevitably) has rushed to his defence. I can see why he has his backers: 'The Pianist' wouldn't exist if he was doing life. It's hard to think of someone that talented locked up and denying the world his art.
