She sits up warily, exhausted, and John comes rushing to her aid. She holds the little baby girl, her little baby girl, and she can't help but smile and let out a small laugh as she looks up at John. He smiles back, shiny eyes and light hair, and kisses her.
Hey there, tears, nice to see you again.
John turns around, looks at Elena, and thinks that even if happiness is overrated, even if it's something he's never really had, it's something she deserves to chase after.
Oh, John.
Later she wonders, as Alaric leans forward and kisses her lightly, if this is what the aftermath tastes like. Like hope, like love, like a life she once used to run after.
These lines are really beautiful and I love the image of Alaric as her port in the storm.
(It isn't that much later that he makes a startling revelation: his hands must be made of butter or oil or something of the sort because everything he's ever had has slipped right through his grasp.)
Oh, Alaric, you are breaking my heart.
Wonderful fic!

I'm really starting to love these 4 together. It's so sad how Alaric's the only one left (and I am still especially bitter over Jenna's death).

Their lives were all so damn tragic and this just proves that. John's was my favorite, because he is, IMO, the most tragic of them all.
But Isobel's...
She's turned her humanity off and now she can't seem to find the button to turn it on again...and vaguely wonders if this is the same Isobel Flemming Alaric fell in love with; if John still loves this her. And she wonders if Elena will ever forgive her.
I can't tell you how perfectly this describes the way I picture her.
Jenna's, well, the hurricane metaphor fit her life so well. And her last thought...loved the simplicity of that.
And you're definitely right about Alaric. It is sad that he outlived them all.

The four of them break my heart so much, and I just find it amazing how they're all so intertwined and connected. They just all led really doomed lives, and yeah Alaric. D:
