i think people are often surprised to hear that i don't really like folk music. nope. not at all. the indigo girls (though their music is so varied and much of it is far from folk) and girlyman are really the only big exceptions. i'm not too crazy about the girl with the guitar thing. that's so tired and so old at this point. i can name at ( Read more... )

snow machine, 1945, girlyman, amy ray, three5human, indigo girls

Have you ever checked out The Heather Combs Band in SF? I just love her/them. They are definitely more rock than folk, esp when the whole band gets together.

I think you would like Okkervil River. They're like a Folkie Indie Punk or however many other meaningless industry buzzwords you want to pile into a descriptor.

Okkervil River - Black
Okkervil River - The War Criminal Rises And Speaks

Also, I have to pimp my number one Last.fm band, The Mountain Goats. While technically folky, I can't think of anyone else who can make an accoustic guitar sound so powerful or who has such moving and sincere lyrics without sounding totally overwrought and cheesy. Of Course, Darnielle's not-so-perfect singing voice only adds to the personality.

The Mountain Goats - Going to Georgia
The Mountain Goats - Game Shows Touch Our Lives

And it just occured to me that a lot of my Goats stuff is in .aac format because I didn't know any better when I ripped my discs. If you can't play 'em let me know. I'll re-rip later. I need to for my RCA MP3 player, anyway.

Oh, good. That means you can listen to .acc files. Have a few more:

The Mountain Goats - The Best Ever Death Metal Band In Denton
The Mountain Goats - The Young Thousands
The Mountain Goats - This Year
The Mountain Goats - Golden Boy

Mmkay, better knock that off for now. I can get carried away.

As for albums that are good to start with, I'd say Tallahassee, We Shall All Be Healed, All Hail West Texas, and Ghana are great.

However, I recommend you check out eMusic instead of going through iTunes. They have a great selection with some good Mountain Goats stuff, a bunch of Daemon stuff, and excellent prices. It's really fabulous if you like 'discovering' bands. I've been a member for over a year and a half. Oh, no file protection on the music, either. Check them out. If you decide you want to try the trial, let me know and I can send you a referral link.

do you know the Gossip? In light of this post, I think you would definitely dig them. If you don't know them, I can upload a couple songs to yousendit.

The Gossip - Yr Mangled Heart
The Gossip - Listen Up!
The Gossip - Don't Make Waves
The Gossip - Where the Girls Are

i went for a range of "better" produced to more raw. (also a reverse timeline. the more raw the longer ago it was recorded, the order i gave you goes from new to old).

also, do you know spearhead? you must, living in sf. my guess is they are too hippie for you, but what are your thoughts? they and the gossip are the two non-folk bands that i am absolutely passionate about.

oh yeah i know spearhead! i really really really love them live. i've seen them several times - they often play with/open for/colab with the indigo girls. i've also seen them on their own.

michale franti is a sweetheart. he once bought me coffee in santa cruz!

yanno, i keep buying these cds on the subway, i really should send you copies. its these three guys who do hip hip. they make it a point to say that they graduated college, and theres no violence or degrading women in their music. admittedly i havent actually listened to one of their discs.. but at $1 it seems fair to buy them anyway.

ohhhh! i'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to hear some of that. right now, in terms of hip hop, i am really into the hyphy (oakland) scene, and some stuff out of the south. i'm not usually keen on east coast stuff, but i'd LOVE to hear some of that. especially since it's so underground and so indie.

Dude - Im so with you. Most people cant believe I even like IG as much as I do - cuz I hate that folky guitar strumming stand there and sing shit. Im not knockin anyone elses likes - but for me - most of the folk out there is all mostly Zzzzzzzzzz. But indie wise - I love love folks like Cordero and Elliott Smith (RIP). And Malone - but shes a given. But GMan and 1945 and those others - I cant hardly get through one note of it before running away.

Ill admit that I seem to listen to more commercial music than anything. From AC/DC to Madonna. No lie. Strike a pose hooker.
