Heh. Is "Ray uses her amazing talent to use her words to reach her audience without being overly poetic or trite" a dig at the fairer IG?

actually, it wasn't even intended to be a dig at IG. no, not at all! but i can see why it would sound like that.

it's really more of a dig at all of those female singer songwriters (you know the ones i'm talking about) who all sound alike, and who all use cheesy poetry and crappy cliches to write their lyrics.

no, not a dig at IG at all. :)

Yeah, but A's songwriting has gotten so much stronger over the years, and E's has gotten a little worse. I'm just tired of her 3 themes. And she's run out of metaphors. Time for her to put out a funk album!

I think E's lyrics have maybe stagnated a bit, but her melodies and arrangements have matured over the past 3 albums or so in my opinion. She seems to be thinking more about how to write for a fully-orchestrated arrangement rather than just the vocal/guitar (or vocal/piano) thing.

lyrics? did someone say lyrics? recent lyrics?
how 'bout:
one day those toughies will be withered up and bent
the father son, the holy warriors, and the president
with glory days of put up dukes for all the world to see
beaten into submission in the name of the free
but we're in an evolution I have heard it said
and everyone's so busy now, but do we move ahead
planets hurling and atoms splitting
and a sweater for your love you sit there knitting

OR
we're sculpted from youth
the chipping away makes me weary
and as for the truth
it seems like we just pick a theory
ah it's the one that justifies
our daily lives
and backs us with quiver and arrows

OR
they're sending soldiers
to distant places
x's and o's
on someones drawing board
like green and plastic
but with human faces
and they want to tell you
it's a merciful sword
but with all the blood
newly dried in the desert
can we not fertilize the land with something else
there is no nation
by god exempted
lay down your weapons
and love your neighbor as yourself
it's apples and oranges peeps ( ... )

btw, you ARE right. in most cases, comparing aray and esal lyrics is like comparing apples to oranges.

for me, it's just a matter of prefrence and what i relate better to... but esal is brilliant. no denyin' that!
