In my usual habit of picking out one itty bit of the post to comment on:

When that east coast blackout deal happened, I was living in San Diego. I guess I don't understand the huge hoopla that was about it. Sure, big area without power, but wasn't it back up pretty quick?

I wonder if there was an east coast baby boom 9 months later... Only one thing to do when the internet is down:)

In some areas, it was up really quick-- Owosso was only down for a few hours at most, and Baker only had a brown-out (on-site backup generators), but there were some areas that were out for a few days... And besides, having NYC (including the NYSE) down for a day is a really really bad/scary thing!! But, I thought that the biggest impact would be the affect on the economy.

Crazy/unstable economy... So dependent on modern luxeries, like indoor plumbing and what-not!

Haha - you should see it here in the dorms sometime. Internet goes down, and all of a sudden, everyone is walking out of their bed rooms, with this "AAhh! The light, it burns!" looks on their faces, and questions such as "INTERNET! What happened to the INTERNET!?!" It's kind of creepy, like watching the dead walk the earth or something.
