BBC Bibliophile list

Apparently the BBC reckons most people will have only read 6 of the 100 books here.

Instructions:

1) Look at the list and put in BOLD those you have read.

2) Add a '+' to the ones you LOVE. +

3) Star (*) those you plan on reading.

4) Tally your total at the TOP.

Who picked this list? )

I score 72. But I too take issue with this list... I mean... who has actually read EVERY WORD of the Bible? Other than someone doing a religion major? but whatevs... my bigger LOL about it is how some wank popular 'lit' titles from the last 10 years have trickled on to that list. And Dan Brown? Puh-leaze.

*raises hand sheepishly* I went through a a period in highschool where I figured that so many people took comfort from this Book, I should be able to figure it out if I read it cover to cover. Took me several months as I would open it at bedtime and promptly fall asleep. (The Old Testament is more readable than the New, imho. :D) I'm not sure though that most of my Biblical knowledge isn't derived from general cultural osmosis. Yay?

So yeah, weird little list! :D

Hee! That serves me right for asking the question! Thing is, I tried to read the Bible too. And I read a great deal of it... but it broke me eventually--just so zzz enducing. I arrogantly assumed since not even I could get through it without religious motivation, no one could! Nicely played. :) My reason for reading it was sociological curiosity too.

I think this is only very loosely connected to the BBC - a few years ago it asked for a poll of the nation's favourite books (and a large number of those turned out to be kids' books and fantasy - Harry Potter, Enid Blyton, ANne of Green Gables, Tolkien, etc...), some of which are the same as the ones on your list. And yes, it's a mix of classics, recent bestsellers and a few old favourites, with no rhyme or reason...

(note: didn't stop me taking the test - I score about 80, if we take a few liberties with the whole Bible, and every single Shakespeare play...;)

Apologies for the late response, I have been rather sleep-deprived lately and am quite bad at tracking my correspondence! :)

Yes, and heavily weighted towards some authors. Somehow in my reading and my education I have totally managed to miss Austen, for instance, so that's several dings right there. Oh well, I have several more decades to improve my score! ;P
