y'know, that con thing

Sep 20, 2007 00:01

I realize it's been a couple of weeks since Dragon*Con, and honest, I was going to write a whole big D*C recap! However, RL intervened and in the meantime dianora2 wrote a very detailed report, with much better pictures (by em_meredith) and far more cute anecdotes than I ever would have remembered. So this is my very idiosyncratic trip down memory lane! (For my own ( Read more... )

I think Jamie amuses himself at these cons by using them to air his thoughts on society in general. Guess he has a lot of flying time to come up with his deep thoughts. (Fwiw, I do generally agree with him, btw, and not just because of the sapphire bullets or Bamceps - though sometimes I feel like he's just a tad frustrated with work right now, and so that bleeds over into general aggravation with the state of the world. :0)) Also, I thought it was notable that he framed his statements as "we" or "our society" several times. Not sure if he now includes himself in US society, or is speaking more broadly as part of Western civ. (Now there's a question for the next con - "do you think of yourself as an 'American' now, or at heart always British?")Interesting observation and I think you may be on to something. I also think he's subjected to so many dumb questions at panels that when he gets asked a good one he takes the opportunity to really share his thoughts ( ... )

My guess is that for Jamie cons are a cross between a performance and a soapbox. Since he doesn't take the same fannish glee in them as Aaron, he has to entertain himself somehow! And it's got to be tough, always being on the road away from his family.

I definitely see him as a citizen of the world. I just thought it was interesting that he seemed - as a recent transplant, no less - to almost take on shared responsibility for how the United States behaves on the world stage. But hey, I'll help you claim him any day! *g*

I've always felt that Jamie does view Cons as another job, another source of income. And that's fine with me. He has a wife, three kids, and a mortgage to worry about and as long as he's as considerate, friendly, and entertaining as he is at these events they'll be no criticism from me. Honestly, I think Aaron enjoys the con atmosphere and fan attention because it's an ego boost. Jamie seems to have no ego and is extremely comfortable with who he is.

I'm sure with having an American father who brought his kids here frequently to visit family, Jamie is very familiar with how things are in the US and has formed some strong opinions. And I'm fine with his criticisms because I feel they are both a product of personal experience and investigation on his part. And I like that while he can find fault with the US (who can't? ;), there also seems to be much he likes about the country.

I think cons are such a peculiar beast. I mean, if not for the fact that these guys are on a 'genre' show (funny designation, too - everything has a genre!!), there would be little or no opportunity to meet them, unless I lived in LA and staked out every premiere. So I'm just glad that Jamie's willing to do cons, so far, and that I've been able to attend a couple.

And I give him a ton of credit for being able to articulate his opinions candidly but not offensively. He obviously spends a lot of time thinking about these things. (I just starting reading that book he said he'd just finished, and it ain't light reading! Then again I never did well in my economics classes. ;0P)

"I get intimidated when I meet people who I... with new people," he amended, and I thought it was very polite of him not to assume that I 'admired' him. *g*
That is VERY nice, yes! :D How sweet of him and now I'm all curious to know who he admires, who HE gets nervous around...

I don't think I would have been capable of going anywhere near him so I admire your courage greatly.

He is so, so lovely. And very good at putting people at ease - not at all patronizing or distant, though I imagine it must be tough to have people wanting a piece of you all day long. (Wonder what he is on the Myers-Briggs scale? ENTJ if I had to guess, possibly wavering between E and I. Hey, another con question! As well as "who do you admire?")

I hope you get to meet him someday. So.damn.gorgeous. Especially between the ears, and at heart. :0)

*giggles* That's ME!

I've never really met any celebrities, and more pertinently I've never met anyone I admire crazily. So I think it would be best for everyone if I kept it that way. I'd probably spend the whole time hiding in the bathroom and then regret it later. I am crazily shy.

That's ME!

I knew there was a reason we got along! ;0)

I still want you to meet Jamie someday. I shall wrap him up in pretty paper and send him along for your birthday! *g*

I babbled something incoherent.

You lucky girl; I would have been mute while not wanting to let go of the soft hands. LOL

Thank you for sharing the cute bits! :-D

Jamie makes it so easy to talk to him - well, except when he gazes at you and poleaxes you with his eyes! *g*

And it was fun to relive the con while writing this! It's like it's not real till I share it with other fans (of course, we had regular squee sessions every night at the con, too!). :0)

That was a great con report. Jamie Bamber sounds like such a nice fellow -- I'm glad you got to meet him and have the entire con experience.

Thanks!! It was a great con. The sheer size was definitely overwhelming at times, so it was wonderful to have friends like wisteria_ and trinnifer who knew their way around. And it was fun to have seen Jamie again and confirm that he is indeed one of the nicest, most thoughtful actors out there.

Great write-up! I would be all tongue-tied too, if I were to ever meet him...aww. He's so sweet.

(BTW, it's dianora2's recap, not mine. If only I had been there!)

He's so sweet.

I heart him so, so much.

I really liked getting the reports from everyone -- FELT sorta like I was squeeing in real time. :) So I'd like to think that at Scruff*Con, I was there in spirit!
