a book review of sorts

Aug 27, 2006 02:49

The following things are present in China Miéville's novel The Scar, leading me to believe that it is a book constructed with the sole purpose of making me as happy as possible:
  • pirates
  • pirate city
  • vampires
  • sea monsters
  • linguistic geekery

love, mieville, books

Oh you definitely should. ♥ Although, if you don't want to be silly like me, the first book in the series is actually Perdido Street Station. The Scar stands well on its own, but there is something to be said for reading books in the proper order. :P

:D

Glad to see that you enjoyed the book! I like Mieville's work too... BTW, if you care about worldbuilding progress, though, read Perdido St. Station first, because while there is no direct connection to Iron Council, there are little details that will be more enjoyable if you've read PSS first.

I'm a little surprised by how much I enjoy his prose, as it's much more lush (descriptive?) than what I typically like. Have you read any of his non-Bas-Lag stuff and was it as good?

I'll start PSS next, then. Thanks for the advice. :)

I haven't, I'm afraid. His non-Bas-Lag novel is King Rat, and I've heard it's good, though, focusing on London and having some kind of tie to music.

Definitely, it is baroque, and his way of half-inventing words and using heavy allusions takes some getting used to.

Definitely sounds like my kind of thing, too :)
