♘ CHARACTER INFORMATION
[ name ] Sharon Rainsworth
[ fandom ] Pandora Hearts
[ canon point ] Post-Chapter 46
[ age ] 23, with the appearance of 13

[ personality ]

Sharon Rainsworth, when taken at face value, can be considered a very polite and charming young lady. She's proper and well-mannered, seemingly easy to flatter and sway. Raised as the known heiress to the Rainsworth family, she had been taught since a young age that appearances were very important. Not just how one looks and dresses themself, but how they act, their etiquette, and their very personality will be placed under a microscope, observed, and taken apart by those they interact with. For that reason, she acts nothing short of an angel when in the company of those that she is unfamiliar with, as anything else would likely mar her family name. Her speech is very eloquent and she's trusted enough by her family to speak on their behalf when her mother is ill and her grandmother is preoccupied, and that was just at the young age of thirteen.

However Sharon is not nearly as easy to read as she may make it seem. The girl is a wonderful actress and able to smile oh so convincingly on cue, and she's quite persuasive as well. Her ability to read the atmosphere has been honed through years of practice, and she will not hesitate to make use of her image as the dainty and sweet Rainsworth heiress in order to get what she wants. Though it's quite rare for her to do anything directly. A warning from her often comes off as vague and for those who haven't earned her trust and respect, even the insults that she delivers are often heavily veiled. This again ties in with the idea that her family's image comes first. If she's to directly offend someone, then that would be absolutely dreadful, and if she were to voice her concerns immediately in between a squabble between two families, then there might be a case of favoritism. Both situations would reflect badly upon her and the entire Rainsworth household. So she has been educated in the arts of tact and mystique.

Then there are those who have managed to earn Sharon's trust and respect, where she is able to relax just a bit more around them. It is then that she starts to reveal some of the true traits of her personality, the pieces of her that never developed from that girlish state. That perfect facade isn't nearly as thick, and she does have a moment of being caught off-guard, though she will quickly adjust her mask. However the fact that even that little break will be visible to her conversational partner shows that Sharon has come to trust them enough to not watch her words quite as much. Just a little trust won't stop her from lying to them outright, however. If she's assured of her reasoning and is positive that divulging information would only hinder herself or, even worse, Break's progress, she has no qualms about using her conversational skills to lead someone onto the wrong path, trust or no trust.

That is because, quite simply, Break is one of the most important people in the world to Sharon. After knowing him for so many years and considering him her elder brother when she was younger, the man has been a constant in Sharon's life for the longest time. He takes care of her, makes sure of her well being, and -whether he's willing to admit it or not- he cherishes her. It's a very close bond, and Sharon would do anything in the world to make Break's life easier. For Break, Sharon is dedicated and obedient. She trusts him in most situations and will follow his instructions because she is assured that whatever he does, it would only benefit her. However in that sense, it is only Break that can blind Sharon so absolutely and completely. Typically, Sharon is observant and perceptive, strong enough to look into things if she so has the mind to. However Break, the manipulator that he is, uses the trust that Sharon places in him in order to guide her away from certain horrors. And it's because of those methods that Sharon is still somewhat naive to the world around her.

Considering her appearance, Sharon often has the play the part of a child. However, when not acting, she refuses to downplay the mature, intelligent, 23-year-old woman that she is. While frail and dainty, she has the inner strength and tact to call an army to their feet. Persuasive in every right, she is also confident and charismatic. Quite the people person, to put it simply. You may challenge her logic or her reasoning, however it would not be an easy battle in the slightest. She is able to think ahead, plan accordingly, and follow through without any hesitance in the slightest. What she lacks in physical ability, she more than makes up for in her ability to match others one for one in intelligence, should she be given the chance to fully display her skills.

Naturally, Sharon has every right to be proud of the woman that she has grown to be, and that pride is unwavering. In the face of danger, she will not be shaken in the slightest, instead remaining tight-lipped and defiant. Because naturally, as a Rainsworth woman, she must be gracious and calm in every instance. Whether she's surprised or upset internally, that doesn't matter. If there are people to judge her, she will give her best performance. So even in instances where her very life may be on the line, she will cling onto whatever last shred of dignity that she can. She will bow her head to no one, and Sharon is simply quite stubborn in that regard.

Though if by some miracle someone is able to somehow reach Sharon's inner circle of her most trusted confidants, there are so many components to Sharon Rainsworth that are not caught in the public eye. Her numerous insecurities would be one of them, mostly concerning whether or not she would be able to be of any assistance to Break. She's well aware that in any situation past simple information gathering, she is essentially useless. As she feels so grateful towards him, it's almost as if there's a debt that needs to be repaid, though it grows more and more difficult to repay when kind act after kind act only makes her feel sinking deeper and deeper into that debt. So to think that she may be a liability to him, that she may have been the one to destroy his chances of being so close to his life's goal, that is enough to set Sharon into a fit of tears.

Unsurprisingly, yet another insecurity of hers is tied into Break. As mentioned before, she places unyielding trust in her servant, and he often takes advantage of it. That normally goes perfectly fine until Sharon is to find out about his trickery. But does that make her trust him any less? No, of course not. Because she knows it to be a fact that the only things he hides from her are things that would make her upset, things that he think would make her falter in her decisions. It's so dreadfully difficult to dislike someone when you know that they do what they do because they care, even if what they did manages to wrack one's sense of self-worth. She's sure that to most people, she accomplishes gaining and maintaining the image of a perfect angel. However that all manages to pale in comparison to what the people closest to her think of her. So if Break fails to trust her, that manages to shatter her fantasy of the both of them working in mutual trust and respect, standing side-by-side in order to accomplish anything.

One of her greatest fears is that those who she trusts, the people who matter essentially, still consider her to be a child. It's a great contrast from the public opinion that she is a child, someone that she strives to convince others of, and the desire to be respected and trusted by her family and friends as a dependable young woman. Because while her physical appearance cannot show any of the development that has happened within the last ten years, its indeniable that the ten years has added to Sharon's experiences and capabilities. To think that anyone still treats her as a child, much less someone as close to her as Break, is a terrible thought. She'd never been hindered by her appearance otherwise, content with her lifestyle and day-to-day schedules, and she's just as trusted by her grandmother as she would be if she looked her age. But clearly that doesn't stop some people from considering Sharon immature, when she is truly anything but.

When things take a turn for the worst, Sharon gets desperate. And when she gets desperate, her strength of will reaches new levels. There are times where she gets rash, forgets her place, and jumps straight into the front of action even though that's clearly the last place that she belongs. Coupled with how stubborn she can be when she's assured that she's right, a trait that remains whether she's properly through everything through or not, it proves to be a very worrisome combination. No one can talk Sharon out of something when she's so completely and totally immersed within her goals. Normally this comes about when harm comes to Break, and she's too worried to think straight. Instead, she feels like she's being driven into a corner, and thus has to fight with all her strength for what she believes in. During this process, she somehow manages to lose a bit of her tact. She's far more prone to loud outbursts of her opinion and speaking out of turn. No, it's not safe at all to allow Sharon outside when she gets to that point.

However sometimes it takes confrontation to bring about development. As mentioned before, Sharon is insecure about how useless she is, but after a few events, she'd managed to finally accept it. So once having calmed down and having to encounter exactly what it was that made her worry so much, the fact of the matter is that Sharon is perfectly reasonable. She didn't go into a phase of denial, she didn't dash out of the house to go prove to herself or foolishly think that she could change her entire being in one night. Instead, she realized that the progress to change would be slow, but she would make the effort to rectify it nonetheless. Once having gotten through her few hours of rebellion and rash actions, she managed to take the experience to heart and come to terms with herself. Short-comings and all, Sharon knows who she is and no longer has any illusions about what she's capable of, physically or mentally.

Now, for some more quirky sides of Sharon's personality. As with any 23-year-old stuck in a 13-year-old's body, it should come as no surprise that she has a few... odd habits. Sharon has what Break has called the "Girl Switch", which effectively clicks on and off depending on whether or not she is in the company of a cute, shy girl. Whether or not that girl is normally abrasive and rude doesn't matter, because it takes only a single moment for Sharon to lock her sights on the poor dear and start making demands of being called big sister. After that, Sharon is prone to having fantasies of herself acting as big sister to that girl, reading her bedtime stories, fixing her hair, dressing up her clothes, and just generally doting on the girl who was unfortunate enough to catch Sharon's attention.

And to say that Sharon has an interest in romance is quite the understatement. She has quite the collection of romance novels, all of which were passed down through the generations of the Rainsworth women. Scandalous matters also manage to catch her attention rather effectively. If there is an argument between the otherwise faithful master and servant duo that is Oz and Gil, Sharon would be quick to jump upon that and request to hear the whole story. And in those moments, Sharon is nothing more than a mere fangirl with a very refined vocabulary. Oh yes, she does have quite the flair for the dramatic. If someone is to do something wrong, then they are to feel the fury of the Rainsworth heiress in the form of a harisen-- that is to say, a paper fan. However the paper fan is quite the weapon in Sharon's capable hands, the technique also having been passed down through the generations. When equipped with a harisen, even the proud Xerxes Break can find himself floored should he do something to upset Sharon. This counts for both serious and light-hearted trespasses, as Sharon seems to have a tendency to whip out the harisen to reprimand him whenever she's upset.

[ history ]

Sharon Rainsworth was first considered vital to the story of Pandora Hearts when she found a bleeding and battered Xerxes Break right on the floor of her home, the gruesome sight added to if only for the fact that he was also missing an eye and the injury appeared recent. ♥ From then on, her mother took care of dear Xerxes, changing him from the cold man he was to a rather easy-going (if not flamboyant) servant of the Rainsworth household. All the while, Sharon grew up alongside him, immediately coming to appreciate his presence and even thinking of him as her big brother figure, happily calling him "Xerx-nii" in her childhood. In fact, since then it's been a habit that's hard to get rid of.

The first official appearance she makes is when she comes to see Oz Vessalius on his fifteenth birthday, claiming to be acting upon her ill mother's behalf. She proceeds to butter him up eloquently state that she supports Oz and give something of a warning of dark events to come. However her stay is not long, as she is still too young to take part in the ceremony or the following ball. Despite the ominous message she gave, it seemed that she acted upon whim and nothing else. This proves false however, when young master Oz ends up being pushed into the Abyss (what can be considered a separate sector of hell that was originally considered imaginary) and Sharon can do absolutely nothing about it.

During the ten years that Oz had been gone, Sharon passed her days as per usual. Acting upon her duties, one of them being making sure that Oz's personal attendant be entered into the Nightray family, and drinking tea. However something notable happened in the same year that Oz disappeared. Sharon became an official member of Pandora. Pandora is an organization that is seen by the public as the typical security-enforcing group, but they really act against unnatural creatures called Chains. Each member of Pandora also has their own Chain, and must make a contract with them. Normally the contract would give people a certain amount of time to live before they are dragged into the deepest level of the Abyss, however Pandora uses a special method that allows its contractors to remain untouched by the seal. However Sharon was one of the rare cases that suffered a side effect, she became unable to physically age. In exchange, she was able to gain the Chain by the name of Eques, a black unicorn capable of attaching to shadows and collecting information.

So without a single change to her appearance, it wasn't long before the day came that Pandora acted to finally retrieve Oz from the Abyss. But much to their surprise, he came on his own, appearing in Sharon's home much like Break did when they first came into contact. The evening wasn't even through when it became evident that Oz had made a contract with a Chain during his time in the Abyss, and it was actually the most dangerous Chain of them all, the dreaded B-Rabbit. And thus when Oz was threatened by Break, B-Rabbit took over and decided to take Sharon hostage. The girl showed absolutely no regard for her own life, telling her servant to leave her be if that was necessary to accomplish their goal. However it seemed that such a thing wouldn't be tolerated, as Sharon was quickly rescued and could do nothing more than watch, and eventually speak on behalf of Pandora, as a very tentative agreement formed between Oz, B-Rabbit (who called herself Alice by then), and Pandora.

The next few events did not leave Sharon with much to do. As Oz went on his first Pandora mission, she did nothing to stop him or even so much as watch over him. Though when he returned to the mansion where he was sucked into the Abyss, Sharon kept tabs on him, Raven, and Alice via Eques. When Raven made his dramatic reveal that he was in fact, Oz's young servant Gilbert (but all grown-up in the past ten years), she couldn't help but tease him about it when they met up afterwards. Otherwise, her presence was unnecessary as Oz went through the challenge of coping with ten years of change.

But when Alice and Break both go missing and Emily, Break's lovely doll, is all that's left, they go to Sharon for help, thinking that leaving Emily was some sort of hint. Knowing full well what Break is planning, though she denies as much, she grants Oz and Raven access to the alternate dimension that Alice and Break were in, again using Eques. From then on, Eques attaches to Oz's shadow, able to keep track of what is happening and leave Sharon informed. When the two are attacked by Cheshire Cat, Sharon steps in and dictates Eques to fight the battle on their behalf. She demands to know what happened in the tragedy of 100 years ago, but receives no answer. Soon after, she is attacked by Echo, a servant of Vincent Nightray, and left unable to do anything to help the others. She is left defenseless, as Eques is also no longer under her power and has been taken control of by an opposing force.

Not long after she is kidnapped, she is taken to Vincent Nightray and subsequently poisoned. For a rather lengthy amount of time, she was considered missing from her home, although the search for her is done very discreetly. She is only saved when Break returns from the alternate dimension and confronts Vincent himself. But by the time her faithful servant arrives, Sharon is already in a bit of a haze due to the poison in her system. All she can do is listen as the conversation progresses to one that makes Break give up the prize he had been searching for, Alice's memories of the Tragedy of Sablier, in exchange for the antidote to the poison. However when it comes to the point where Break must choose to destroy it himself, Sharon intervenes best she can, insisting that she is all right and that Break shouldn't do as Vincent says. But her attempts are found to be in vain as Break proceeds to destroy the memories anyway, telling her that it would be all right. After a close call with the antidote almost being dropped off the balcony, Sharon is then treated and falls asleep, very exhausted from the distressing day.

When she wakes, it seems that all the anger she held up until that moment is quickly released. Proceeding to mock Break's words about how everything would be okay, since as far as she's aware it was most certainly not okay, she quickly administered his punishment via paper fan and pillow. All for her sake, he managed to destroy what they had been looking for. But when he proceeds to say that it wasn't for her sake, and merely to save his own life from the wrath of her mother, it manages to catch her off-guard and quell the rest of her anger. Any violent actions are then halted as she is left only with feelings of regret, for being unable to protect herself and for hindering him. Unable to hold back any tears, she expresses her sadness and clings to her good ol' big brother figure, even going back to the habit of calling him "Xerx-nii".

For a while after that, Sharon is more or less out of commission. As Oz, Raven, and Alice go back to be reunited with his darling sister, she remains in the manor with Break. But as the group of three return, not in the best of spirits, she notices the rather gloomy atmosphere. While she finds the distance between Raven and Oz refreshing for a few moments, she's immediately distracted by the ever-so-cute romantic troubles of Miss Alice. Quickly finding herself in a fit of adoration for the girl, Sharon insists that Alice should start considering her as her older sister. The day continued like that for a while, and it included the beatings of Break and Oz whenever they said or did something that Sharon was less than pleased with. The long day ended with Oscar, Oz's affectionate uncle, stopping by the manor and offering them all wine-- though he preferred to call it juice. It was made clear then just how quirky Sharon could get, as light was shed upon the fact that apparently she developed a queen-complex when drunk. Naturally the night could not be complete without a few unreasonable demands and haughty name-calling.

In the most recent arc of the story, the group went to investigate the devastated city of Sablier to investigate and find out the mystery of one hundred years past. Seeing as it’s quite the dangerous destination, Sharon was left behind in the manor. However when they came back, poor Break was in awful condition. He was left in a coma for three days, Sharon worrying over him day and night. When he finally awoke, she was one of the first to greet him. Of course, she first starts off by beating with a harisen, his proper punishment for allowing himself to get so beat up. But after her temper died down some, Sharon couldn’t help but choke up, admitting her happiness that he was awake and how scared she felt when he was asleep. The day continues on normally, though the cast is left unaware of a crucial development: Break had lost his sight. As they are ushered out of the room later on, Sharon laments about the feeling she gets that Break isn’t telling her something. While they were gone, she had spent her time looking into information about Sablier, information that Break had kept hidden from her. She was quite upset as she reached the end of her thought process, thinking that Break still considered her a little girl when she wanted so desperately for them to work as equals.

Now when the rest of the cast decides to take that time to visit Duke Barma to get some answers, Sharon insists on going along as well. If there is something that she can do to help, it is not inside the manor. She is very pushy about this, convincing her way through sheer desperation alone. Either way, it manages to convince the others to allow her to go. When they do manage to reach the Barma manor, the obnoxious Duke starts to irritate others with the talk of using others as pawns. He compares himself to Break, and that’s what makes Sharon snap. In response to her insolence, Duke Barma takes it upon himself to attempt to teach her some respect, beginning to launch an attack on her. She is then shielded by Raven and left untouched. Shortly after, the group leaves in search of their next clue.

With some trouble on Sharon’s part, they manage to reach their next destination easily enough. However as soon as they step foot inside, they’re under attack. This was another time that Sharon pushed her way in, sure that she could protect herself if she had Eques with her. She makes an attempt to call said Chain, but it fails to appear. Confused at this, she isn’t sure what’s happening. All she knows is that she was left wide open for an attack, being lectured about how she’s just a little girl that’s no help at all when there’s no one there to protect her. To emphasize this, the blow that was meant for Sharon was then given to a Pandora member that was present with them, getting himself hurt instead of her. Eventually their enemy is beaten, but not before Sharon is left with quite a bit to think about.

They first intend to leave the mansion to get some rest, but as they are a fair ways away, there is a sudden disturbance that makes them return to the mansion, only to find the corpses of their companions who stayed behind. It was quite a gruesome sight, and a few days after, Sharon's grandmother requests to see her. It's a brief conversation where Sheryl does her grandmotherly duties of making sure that Sharon is all right, and encouraging the young girl. However during that meeting, Sharon admits to her grandmother a few things. Those things being that she realizes that she is absolutely useless and has come to take her Chain for granted. However with kind words from the head of the Rainsworth family, Sharon is able to acknowledge that no matter what she does, she will still be connected with her comrades. It is a step in the right direction for the girl.

[ abilities ] In her canon, Sharon has a contract with a creature classified as a Chain. Her Chain in particular is a black, flaming unicorn called Equis. Equis is capable of bieng summoned to battle, but is more commonly used as a way to keep track of others. By hiding in someone's shadow, Equis can keep tabs on that person for Sharon as she hears and see what is happening around her target. She can also speak with them, as well as teleport items and people to their location.

Sharon also seems to have quite an arm, able to use a paper fan to beat those who anger or upset her into a pulp, though that's more comic relief than anything.

♗ SAMPLES
[ first person ] [As Sharon's visage appears on the mirror, she doesn't seem perturbed in the slightest. Instead, she's smiling and all set to make her request.] Oh, how fortunate that it's able to work! Though it's a rather strange means of communication, if it works effectively, I suppose all is well.

... All is well in that sense, I suppose I should clarify. Unfortunately, I've found myself a bit perplexed considering this situation. I wonder, would it at all be possible for someone to assist me? Only if you have the due time available, of course, I would so hate to break into someone's set schedule.

To introduce myself, I am Sharon of the Rainsworth family. If someone would simply direct me towards Xerxes Break, then I do hope that everything will fall into place shortly thereafter.

Oh, and... Break? If you're able to see this, I'm sure that you know what I expect. While there isn't any rush per say, I certainly hope you don't take that as an invitation to take your time. [Translation: You should've found me two minutes ago, slacker.]

Thank you for your time, I'm quite grateful. Please enjoy the rest of your day as much as possible.

[ third person ] The little miss could not help but find all of this to be quite a strange turn of events. Before her arrival in this strange and foreign country, the last thing that she recalled was retiring for the night, in her sleeping gown and then allowing sleep to overtake her. She wondered if this could be a dream, but this was all too real to be a dream... wasn't it?

Another option was kidnapping, but this was certainly the strangest kidnapping she'd ever been forced into. They even dared to make a change in her attire! ... but they wouldn't leave her in the middle of this 'war'. That simply didn't make sense.

Though no matter how she looked at it, she couldn't do much about the situation. While the people she came across did not have faces, they did have mouths. And every answer she got out of those mouths only convinced her that they knew nothing of the Rainsworth family! At first it was a hit to her pride, but once it became clear to her that it was a common answer, she had to rethink the situation. No matter what town name she suggested, the ones she spoke to clearly had no idea what she was talking about.

So the Sharon retired to finding a seat outside what seemed to be a bakery, bearing a heavy heart and heaving an even heavier sigh. One surely couldn't blame her for showing a bit of fatigue, as she only grew more and more exasperated with this situation. Break was nowhere to be seen, and she was unsure if she wished to use the mirror as communication, like she had seen others doing. It could prove to be unsafe, as she was unsure if it was possible to send messages to specific people. And if that was not possible... she had to be wary of any enemy.

'But desperate times call for desperate measures, do they not?' she thought to herself, finding that there really may be no other alternative. She would merely have to choose her words very carefully when communicating, and if she was lucky, she would be able to contact Break. As per usual, she was not fond of having to depend solely upon him, but she had to swallow her pride for the moment.

Because for now, Sharon was lost. And when she was lost, Break would always help her find her way.
