While I normally volunteer at the clinic for women and the lgbt center at my school, I am also wearing purple today to honor Spirit Day. I'm also wearing purple to remember the victims and to unite with others who are against anti-gay bullying and stand up for gay rights. In more than once place, I've heard people say "WEARING PURPLE DOES NOT END ( Read more... )

THANK YOU SO MUCH. I've also seen people (including a really close friend) speaking out against this day on Tumblr and then claiming they "aren't homophobic, just annoyed by all these posts about Purple Day when wearing a purple shirt doesn't really mean anything!" And it's just. No. People put up with a lifetime of being bullied because of their sexual orientation; you can put up with one day of your dashboard being flooded with posts about standing up for them. I am just can't believe that people have the gall to treat a day about supporting an oppressed minority as something stupid or annoying.

And ffs, if people are not a part of the LGBT community they do not have the right to judge that the day is "not a big deal" or whatever. I don't care if you think that supporting Purple Day won't actually help anyone, random straight person, this day isn't about you. People need to seriously stop misjudging how much just knowing there are people who support you when everyone else seems against you can help someone.

It just seems like thinly veiled homophobia to me, trying to take this away.

I don't know why anyone would say that today. I AM QUEER, and I posted something a few WEEKS ago trying to encourage people to do something in addition to wearing purple… Then it was an attempted rally. I had planned to blog something, but I'm just so fucking exhausted this week that it isn't happening. I may later. But today? I wore my fucking rainbows and purple, and we made blueberry (purple) waffles where I work to give to students. Today, with so many people at our work wearing it, it was a blazing flag for the students to see.

Obviously, wearing a purple shirt isn't a panacea. No shit, guise. But sometimes you just have to damn well show your colors.
