So I'm looking for some input from all you fine folk. I just got pinged on to recommend some good multi-player games for a possible gaming server here at work. The problem? I've been a console gamer for the past X years, and have no real idea what's worthwhile and what's not these days in the land of PC gaming ( Read more... )

I might be biased, but I think Half Life 2 would be worth it considering. Buying Orange Box gives you Half Life 2 Death Match, Counterstrike Source, and Team Fortress 2. Three great multiplayer FPS games, all of them unique and none of them terribly complicated (as I understand it, Team Fortress 2 has been significantly "dumbed down"). Plus, it comes with Half Life 2, both of the following episodes, and Portal- very worthwhile ( ... )

Well, the reason we're looking at this, is our other offices already have servers set up, so we're hoping we can convince our VP that it's inline with company policy, and that it'll be good for moral/stress relief, etc.

I don't know what the chances of us actually getting it are, but we're gonna try.

TF2 did not feel that complicated to me - it's very cartoony in style, with a great sense of humor, so most people can just hop in and run around and click the mouse and see what happens.

The classes are pretty self-explanatory, too. It's not like there's always some magnificent balance that will get shattered if too many people spawn as Medics or something. Just choose something different on the next spawn!

Hrm, good to know about TF2.

See, I'm not really sure what sort of gaming experience the people who will be utilizing this server have. What seems simple and self-explanatory to you and me might be too complicated to people who don't game on a regular basis. Plus, I don't know if they want all those options, or if they'd just be happier with something where you don't have to worry about class options and are just focused on killing people.

TF2 might be a good game a little later down the road, but for now, I'm thinking just getting something fairly simple - basically just free for all death matches.

I made my comment with that in mind, though. When I first played Halo CE, I had virtually no experience with first person shooters, and there were some definite strategies that I never ever employed - I just pointed and shot, most of the time.

TF2 I've only played one match in, so far, and while I was completely lost, I was also having a good time, since I could just run and around and be sneaky, or play around with shooting.

I've not played UT2K4, but after playing a bit of UC2 and testing UT3 (which is supposed to be more old skool than 2K4), I would say there's still some complexity there - perhaps more than TF2, just in terms of vehicles and weapon effectiveness and such.

Visually, TF2 is so hilarious. I just want to run around and play with the scenery a lot.

Hrm, okay. Like I said, I haven't played with TF2 yet, so I really don't know. I guess I worry that people won't want to play around with the classes, or will try them out, go "why am I not shooting?" and then just go back to what ever the basic "point'n'shoot" class is, sorta negating the point of having classes.

Also, does TF2 HAVE deathmatches, or is it all team based stuff?

TF2. HL2: DM ariock October 18 2007, 20:19:54 UTC
To answer a question above, TF2 is team-based only. HL2: Deathmatch can be modified to be team based or deathmatch. Both are a huge amount of fun (though as a Team Fortress player from back when it was on Quake, I'm a little biased toward TF2). I don't know if HL2:DM is available with the orange box.
