Instead of unleashing on my co-worker, I decided to write this here. I find it extremely sexist to write Dear Sirs when addressing a company in a letter. Unless of course you have personal knowledge that only men work at said company or you know with absolute certainty that you are addressing multiple men, but NEVER to replace the gender neutral To

Wow. Who still does that? I've never seen a "Dear Sirs" letter. I thought that was dead and gone!

On a humorous note, the handful of huddling men grumbling over the letter reminds me of a flash mob one of my steampunk fellows wants to arrange wherein a large group of men with fantastic moustaches invades a Manhattan Bar to stand around and have "harumphing" conversations/contests. It would be fantastic.
