I haven't seen the movie, but since I don't plan to, I didn't mind reading all the spoilers. I'm pretty glad to finally read a negative review on a gaming site, since everything I've seen about PoP has been fairly positive so far, especially in a "it's great for what it is" sort of way.
Apparently the movie is also a sign of video game movies getting better or something, at least according to some of the stuff I read. But I doubt it's the best video game movie ever made, so. Also, I really don't see a reason to delineate video game movies from other action-oriented movies. They're not really like movies based off comic books, since (for the most part) those exist as a very specific sub-genre of action movies (with the people being superheroes thing and all).
Anyway, I'm really tired of the whole white actors playing characters that kill lots of non-white individuals thing. It's really annoying and seriously, how does that not come off as racist?
I recognize all it's flaws but I will say that I did enjoy the movie despite them, and it was quite similar to the game (but of course, the usual "WEAK FEMALE OMG" stance annoyed the crap out of me, especially since Tamina was supposedly based on Farah- a strong female who kicks ass -and spent the movie shrieking and being bound).
I saw it 'cause I was moody and didn't want to have to think, and then felt guilty afterwards. *headdesk* It wasn't even a good movie - I thought it was very predictable, full of clichés
( ... )
I saw the movie and as far as mindless entertainment goes, it was absolutely awesome. It was white-washed as hell but tbh I'm glad to have a video game movie that doesn't suck, and I still find this less offensive than what they did to Avatar: The Last Airbender.
I saw it last night, and I enjoyed it in the same way that I enjoyed Avatar. It was fun, entertaining and had a lot of good scenes. But I absolutely had to turn off my brain and ignore a ton of racist and sexist crap. I couldn't even turn it off all the way, and I was SO disappointed in the main female character.
I wonder what it would be like having this exact same premise/set up but with a man as the holy guardian and a woman as the ass kicking princess.
Oh, and the assassins were actually "Hassansins" so there were no bad sand puns :) They actually spell it out in the movie that way, IIRC.
