I completely see this as nothing more than a rape joke. I feel like the girl who was almost raped was pretty much completely erased from the picture. I also think it's sad that no one seems to care that there is a serial rapist that still hasn't been caught.
Because his sister was almost raped, because several of their neighbors were really, actually raped, and because he and his sister went to the police about the problem and weren't taken seriously at all, which is why they ended up going to the media in the first place.
I think classism is also a huge factor of this meme, but yeah, if the interview was with some white middle-class guy who was openly angry about his sister nearly being raped saying all the same things (hide your kids, hide your wife, no one's safe, you're a dumb criminal and we're going to catch you), I don't think it would be seen as hilarious.
I think it's hard to argue that they're taking advantage of the Dodsons, seeing as how they're making an even 50% of the profits and Antoine is linked from the video itself,
Giving someone 50% of the profits off a video that they presumably didn't approve of before it was out there that mocks an interview following the attempted rape of one of their children isn't taking advantage of them? Really? If anything the money is telling them, the poor black family, to shut up and "make something positive out of it", re: the money these white folk are making off their daughter's assault/attempted rape and their son's angst.
The whole thing just disgusts me and I really hope the daughter is doing alright.
Mm, well, it's more than that. I've been over to his YouTube Channel and I just get the impression that he is grateful for the financial/emotional support he's received since he got meme'd. Again, though, this is just the impression I got from him.
But what about her? Yes, he's been all over the place and has spoken positively of the money coming in(who wouldn't? iirc, they're using the money to move someplace safer) though that doesn't change the race/class issue in this or that they likely didn't have much say to begin with. Also, just because the family appears to have went with the "make something positive out of it" doesn't make it any less disgusting of the Gregory Brothers to have made a song like this in the first place.
I admit, I laughed at it at first. But the more I see it and hear it, the more it starts to piss me off.
The whole thing screams of 'LOL, POOR/BLACK/POOR BLACK PEOPLEZ' to me. He is legitimately upset and yelling about how his own flesh and blood came close to being assaulted and maybe even killed. He got a chance to vent at the camera, and did so. And of course, the actual victim of the attack hasn't even been mentioned since.
I'm not sure how I feel about the profit that's coming from it as well. On one hand, they're getting to use it to better their lives, and the exposure might be helping her attacker come to justice. On the other hand, the fact that it's popular for the mentioned troublesome reasons and that people can *make money off of it*... Meh. :\
