I wasn't quite expecting to see a commentary on this particular show on my friends list, but now that it's here it's interesting to see. At the same time, though, I'm stuck having to admit I haven't watched any of "Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt" yet... while I'm not completely certain something "frankly, unrepentantly obscene and scatological" would be my absolute first choice to see, it does also sort of seem a matter of "whatever time I devote to watching anime goes to watching DVDs," as there are a few other series streaming right now that also sort of caught my attention but which I haven't started watching yet either. There does seem a certain... primness to some of the negative opinions on it that I've seen, anyway, and that's included a certain amount of "I'm not interested in a Japanese show drawing inspiration from American animation" too.

You know, I've never yet seen anyone dislike P&S because it looks "American", but I am really, really not surprised that it happens. I am so very glad to be a born-again American cartoon fan.

OTOH, I seem to have less problem with an "American style" Japanese cartoon than vice versa, since, while it's still problematic, it doesn't have the modern baggage that "anime style" American cartoons have, namely the feeling that Japanese animation is Just Better, including referring to all sci-fi cartoons as "anime influenced".

Most of the complaints I've seen are about the raunchy nature of the show, and the unlikeable heroines, though.

I suppose that particular judgment on the series may not have been a wide-spread one, but it's one that did catch my attention. (I suppose it might have because the person who made it on the message board I follow also holds a lot of other strong opinions, although not nearly in the same tiresome way that can come across at times...)

I also understand your point contrasting "'American style' Japanese animation" and "'anime style' American animation"; while I've come to think that one of the things that interests me in anime is pure "eye candy" appeal, I can also say that a story's a story, no matter how it looks (and imagine hypothetical cases to prove that point). For that matter, I can think back to when I first saw Robotech in the 1980s and remember that it was its story, rather than my imprecise and undetailed mental image of how it looked, that kept me interested in it...
